Just put a deposit on a new 4 stoke Yamaha 115hp for a houseboat, I certainly want the this over the 2 cycle. But with the oil changing issue IM afraid this was the bad choice, it cost 250$ and jump through hoops to pull this boat on the ramp, not to mention lower unit changes (grease)...... the sales person was at a losss as to what it would take, of by the way where is the oil filter located............

guess I need to re think the 2 cyle issues unless someone has some tips thanks

45 years outboard exp on the waters. 1 year houseboat, 0 time with 4 stroke

Re: Yamaha 4 strokers with exper,

All you need to do is buy a device at Walmart or Amazon that you stick the plastic tube down the oil fill hole and pump it to suck the oil out.

If you don't want to do it yourself a marina will do it the same way.

Do a search on amazon.com for: Liquivac Topside Oil Changer. It's $39.99. A similar one is even cheaper at Walmart.

The marina is going to charge you a lot more for them to do it when all you have to do is suck out the old oil with this device and pour in a few quarts of new oil.

The filter can be bought at West marine and it just screws off and a new one just screws on.

Pick up an oil filter wrench up at West or Walmart that makes the job easier to loosen a sometimes stuck on from the motors heat. When screwing on a new one you moisten the gasket with a little oil and screw it on till it's snug by hand and then give it another 1/4 turn. Start the motor and check for leaks around the oil filter and your good to go.

You can get exact instructions by doing a search on google on changing oil on an outboard too!

Re: Yamaha 4 strokers with exper,

oil changes can be done in the water, gear lube changes on any make or model outboard will require the gear case to be in the down position.
so you have to be able to drain and fill it without water getting in it. it usually requires it to be on land
the hardest part is it still requires fuel system and cooling system maint like any other brand.
