I have a Yamaha 40 hp etlj 1986, and it has a short. When the power is turned on it blows the 10amp fuse. This happened to me on the water in the middle of the bay. I thought was running out of fuel it felt like it was sputtering, I slowed down to check the fuel and that was it. Everything was dead, no trim controls, no power. Luckily I had a trolling motor to get back to boat launch.
I have disconnected all wiring and one by one (blowing fuses on the way) connecting them until the only thing not connected is the thermo switch assembly. Everything work great without hooking up that switch, but its not right. I was able to run water through the motor to clean it out. The thermo switch assembly had continuity when I first tested it but then I tried pulling it out. I don?t think it just pulls or twists out next I tried running voltage directly thru the thermo switch. I was trying to test the part. I think I broke it because the continuity is gone.
What is a thermo switch assembly?
Is that my problem?
How do you replace that switch?
