yamaha 40hp starting problem

I have a 40 hp yamaha that start the first time but after shutting off will not do anything,replaced ignition switch and started, shut off put controls back together.and then would not turn starter over.

Which controls are you using? The 703 control box does not have a lot of room for all of the wires and it is very easy to crush one between the two halves. Before you pull it back apart, try moving the handle back and forth with the key switch in the start position. If it now cranks, check the neutral safety switch, if it doesn't, pull the box apart and try manually depressing the switch.
