On a 2001 Yamaha 5 HP outboard with roughly 20 hours on the motor, very little water is coming out of the telltail. Do these motors have a thermostat, and if so, how long would it take to come up to temp? If not, any ideas on what the problem might be? Thanks.

Yes, the engine does have a thermostat.. The engine should come up to temp in just a few minutes..

If the waterpump is original and has never been serviced, thats where to start... The impeller in the waterpump has a service life of just over two years, after that time the impeller begins to deteriorate reguardless of use....

I'd recomend a complete waterpump kit (OEM yamaha parts).. If you would like, exploded views are shown at http://www.yamaha-motor.com/products/categories02/5/otb/yamaha_outboard_motors.aspx under "parts and service" click parts catalog, choose outboards then select the model year and go from there..
