I am looking to improve the alarm facilities on my pair of Yamaha 50 4 strokes ( one 1996; one 2004).

I am looking to install both audible and visual warnings for both high temp and low oil pressure in a fashion that cannot be missed by the operators !

The literature available is not particularly comprehensive in this field. While I am happy electronically; before playing I wonder has anyone else on the forum delved into this area ?

Many thanks

Terry

Re: Yamaha 50 4 stroke Alarm Wiring

Thanks for replying. AS I understand it, the audible alarm is only for overheating - no audible alarm for low o/p. Warning lights are fine but not obvious.
I was hoping to take a feed from each sender to operate my own system with a loud buzzer and flashing led for each alarm state.
The standard alarm circuit is grounded to complete and operate - my plan was to diode input some ciruitry off this and I was interested to see if anyone had done similar.

Terry

Re: Yamaha 50 4 stroke Alarm Wiring

hello
the oil pressure is audible as well. the signal from the pressure witch is sent to the engine computer. the computer determines wheather to illuminate the oil or hot lamps on the tach and sends the ground signal for the audible at the keyswitch. there is a 20 second delay built into the system and some engines require an rpm of 2000 or greater or the oil alarm never works. if you wish to use a louder horn use a relay from the pink wire at the keyswitch. the yellow wire is key on 12v. all yamaha control signals are ground signals. so to activate the horn the engine computer grounds the pink wire and current frows from the ign switch through the horn through the pink wire and to the computer. that is why I say use a relay. I dont know how much load the computer circutry can handle.
good luck and keep posting

Thank you ! - thats a great help .... my circuit would draw negligable current (just a mA or so to turn on a transistor with units power from the boats batteries) .... but didnt realise the onboard system was intelligent and they are often not agreeable to modification !!
Would your posting also apply to the 96 model ?

Many thanks

Terry
