Yamaha 704 Throttle ? Slipping

I have a 115 hp Yamaha (2002) with a 704 throttle. When under way the throttle slips back when I take my hand off. I thought I’d read somewhere that it has a tension screw under the cover, but I removed the four black screws that look like the mount the throttle assembly to the console and I can’t remove it.

Is removing those screws the access to the tension adjustment? Is it just stuck and should I try to pull a bit harder? I tend to get nervous when I have to use percussive measures to remove things.

Thank you for any suggestions.

the 4 black screws only hold on the plastic cover. remove plastic cover carefully, look on the sides , there are some allignment holes..maybe pull a bit on those to remove the plastic cover.

(there are 4 bolts that secure the binnacle to the console. no need to take those off, cause the throttle tension screw is now exposed) the tension screw is on the front of the binnacle closest to you. small stainless screw if i remember. give it a twist...

Finally got the cover off. A bit of the plastic broke, but nothing to worry about. I see two screws as shown in the attachment. Should I assume the top screw is the tension for forward and the bottom is tension for reverse? Thanks for any help.

Great picture Captn, Thanks. I didn't even look underneath. I'll make the adjustment tomorrow, then give it a whirl on Lake Anna Saturday.

Thanks again.

Re: Yamaha 704 Throttle Slipping - Lake Anna

Saturday will be my first trip to Lake Anna. I've only had the boat for 6 weeks so I'm still getting it outfitted. Made the mistake of stopping at Bass Pro Shop on my way back from a business trip last night and spent $500. :D

We just relocated Virginia from Oklahoma where I'd to a couple of stripper trips a year to Lake Texhoma. But I'm looking forward to some fall stripper action at Anna. Next Saturday we leave for a week in the Outer Banks and the boat will be close behind me, ready for some flounder and hopefully some rockfish action.

if you have never boated here on the banks ya may wish to hire a guide for a half day. we got lots of water but also a lot of thin water with a hard sand bottom.
but I hear some flounders and some bluefish showed up at the inlet of late.
good luck.

By the way Captpn, that picture was dead on and adjusting that screw did the trick. Thanks.
