My uncle has a 2001 70hp yamaha on a carolina skiff. The last time he took it out, when he tried to turn the engine off,the engine would not cut off with the key.He bumped the trim switch up and down several times and it finally died.Any tips on what to trouble shoot?

Re: yamaha 70hp key switch problems

check all the ground connections at the powerhead. that system shorts the white wire in the harness to the black(ground) wire in the harness. did he try the emergency stop switch? the trim switch had nothing to do with the ign shutdown. once the white wire is ungrounded and the flwheel is spinning the ign is self powered and does not rely on battery volatge, as far as just the ing system is concerened the battery can be left on the dock. if it will shut down correctly by the E stop switch then its possible the keyswitch is failing. if it wont, start looking for loose, corroded or discconected spots in the black and white harness wires.

then most likly the keyswitch is ok and eiter the black wire is not grounded or the white wire has an open circuit from the switches to the CDI. in rare cases the CDI will be bad.

I have a volt meter.I know how to test for a ground problem, but how do I test for a open circuit? And how do you check the cdi?

Re: yamaha 70hp key switch problems

no check on the CDI itself. a test for an open will be from pin to pin. does the skiff have a 703 sidemount box or a 704 with a seperate key panel?

Re: yamaha 70hp key switch problems

that certanly makes it esier. its all plug and play under there. test with your ohm meter from the black wire at the swtich to the engine block for continuity and from the white wire at the cdi to the white wire at the switch for continuity. or with the key off test from the white wire at the CDI to the engine block for continuity.
