check all the ground connections at the powerhead. that system shorts the white wire in the harness to the black(ground) wire in the harness. did he try the emergency stop switch? the trim switch had nothing to do with the ign shutdown. once the white wire is ungrounded and the flwheel is spinning the ign is self powered and does not rely on battery volatge, as far as just the ing system is concerened the battery can be left on the dock. if it will shut down correctly by the E stop switch then its possible the keyswitch is failing. if it wont, start looking for loose,corroded or discconected spots in the black and white harness wires.
