Yamaha 8 & 9.9 2 strokes?

I am interested in picking up a used 8 or 9.9 two stroke Yamaha. Can anyone tell me how much they changed from the 90s through the mid 2000s?

Is a early 1990s basically the same as a mid 2000s or was there a significant design change?
