Hello. I pulled off the lower unit and the screw that needed to be loosened for the shift rod broke and when i pulled the shift rod came off from the lower unit instead. so now i pushed the rod back in the lower unit and it when in twice but not the third time.

do i need to pull apart the lower unit to get the shift rod in or is there a way around it? it seems like there is a rid that moved to block the shift rod from going in there.

so, how do i get the shift rod clamp out and how do i get the shift rod back into the lower unit? thanks so much!

Re: Yamaha 8 HP Help!

only way to reinstall the shift rod is to remove the propshaft first.
to remove the shaft boot first remove the screw from the retainer, then use a pick on the holes from the outside just below the retainer and push in and up,once the retainr is out the boot comes out.
if this is saltwater use it may be best to have it done at a competent shop.

Re: Yamaha 8 HP Help!

Thanks so much for the advice. So to confirm I understand you correctly. I need to take the cotter pin, nut and prop off and pull out the guts of the lower unit or is there an easier way to do it? can I just pull the pin back anyway enough to slide the shift rod down into it?

Also, if you know. I have to pull off the shift linkage clamp. The screw broke off in it. There is a pin on the upper rod that holds it on. Do you know if I can slide that out? I don't want to have to remove the whole upper rod. I think I have to pull the power head to remove the upper rod?

Thanks!
