Re: yamaha 80hp

thhanks for that pal, before posting i did alot of searching and i saw the faria instrument guide and thought it might be 12pole...but other posts i found on the 80 led me to believe it was 6pole 3pulse..and i thought i would get one or the other confirmed...i will go with the 12 an see what happens....do you or anybody else have a rev range i should be looking for on this motor...tickover and wot...just for info the two stroke is auto mix from a bottle at the engine and its three cyl...thanks agin

A owners manual or the service manual should give you all that info and verify the # of poles.
If you plan on running the motor for any time it would be a real good investment to get the Yamaha service manual

Re: yamaha 80hp

i would get a manual if i knew which one:confused:, i own manuals for every bike an car i have had but they seem easy to track down...outboard manuals seem to cover a variety of engines
a v5 (paper id for a vehicle)doesnt come with an engine thats why forums like this are so invaluable to the average joe, an lets face it knowledge is easy carried and past on;)
if you could point me in the direction of the correct one,it would be appreciated...thanks again:D

Re: yamaha 80hp

rodbolt thanks:) set it at 12pole, tickover sitting at 850 opens up to 3800 equates to about 28mph...the only thing now is the last third of throttle kicking in...at that stage i have noticed that the butterflys are open and the bar operating the oil pump starts to move and opens up fully with full throttle but nothing from the engine, no increase in revs or speed:(

Re: yamaha 80hp

check compression, test spark fix the fuel system. if the boat is new to you then I would run it on test whel YB1620 looking for 4800 to 5000 RPM. that will eliminate any hull or prop issues.
this is an international motor that the US market never got so I cant help but so much.

Re: yamaha 80hp

thanks for your time rodbolt...125psi on all three...spark is good...fuel is good, i have discovered its an 83 model (only made for one year) thats why i cant find a manual:(...i have no idea what a test wheel is or does
my logic: the engine runs fine until 3800, i have one third ish of throttle travel left and thats when the oil pump arm starts moving....the butterflys are open(so maximum fuel is being delivered) therefore it must be mechanical...timing?...how do i check it at wot without being full throttle on the water

Re: yamaha 80hp

you dont test WOT out of the water.
find a dealer with the correct test wheel or buy one.
first you have to determine is it a hull/ prop issue or an engine issue.
the oil control arm moves any time the throttle arm moves or its not adjusted correctly or parts are missing.
but on a new to you hull that you know nothing about its imperative to use a shop tach to verify RPM and the test wheel to verify engine power output.
if not, ya is a pokin an a hopin.
usually rather expensive.
