i have a 2000 Yamaha 9.HP 4 Stroke Outboard motor. I just had the carb rebuilt because it had been sitting for about a year. I filled the tank with fresh fuel, and adjusted the carb according to the "Seloc" manual, I'm pretty sure i got it where it should be with the exception of the float it seems there are several different methods to use for the adjustment. will a bad float adjustment cause the motor not to idle? i think its close but maybe a little off. if i play with the accelerator pump and pump it by hand the motor will stay running (but only at higher than an idle. is there an easy way to adjust the float and know that its correct so i can at least eliminate that as a possibility? any help would be greatly appreciated

Mine (1993) also had a poor idle problem as well. Have you replaced the fuel filter? Fuel flow to pump OK?

Sounds to me as a novice that there is some dirt somewhere. On mine, I initially overlooked the small idle fuel inlet hole (in the throat near the air/fuel adjustment screw (non EPA carb)). Assuming 2000 is a similar design, you might take off the carb and check this path carefully; try spraying with carb cleaner and maybe use a soft tooth brush to gently scrub. Best would be to tear down the carb again and make sure all jets, nozzles, flow paths are open to carb cleaner spray. Wear safety goggles. As Rodbolt has said "don't ask".

I have done that 2 times now, I also changed filters plug and wires. I have done everything I can think of, but I just have the feeling it is somthing small that I have overlooked.

When you rebuilt the carb, did you follow the manual as for adjusting the Float? How did you adjust it?

Did you actually take the carb apart 2x or just spray cleaner down the throat? The latter may not do much.

My float is set parallel to the body. If it were mine, I would tear it down again, remove the jets and nozzle, soak the body and spray all passages again with cleaner, and verify same are clear before re-assembly. Special attention to the idle fuel hole. Yours sounds plugged. You may need a very fine (soft) wire to gently remove a clog. Be careful not the scratch anything.

Be careful with the float. The pin is a press fit and should come out in one direction only (I recall an arrow). But, I would not muck with it unless the float were leaking but just spray cleaner in the needle valve orifice.
