Yamaha 90 trim/tilt problem

2001 C90 Yamaha will slowly tilt/trim down while poling and running.<br />Problem is getting worse over last few months.<br />The trim/tilt otherwise works fine. No external fluid leaks visible. Level is not low.<br />No visible corrosion/problems on rams.<br /><br />Several of my friends with same or similar motors have noticed same problem.<br />I notified Yamaha customer service, they were "unaware" of any issues.<br />Local mechanic recommended against replacing just the seals, but entire trim/tilt assembly (part alone $900)<br />Another mechanic recommended cleaning and replacing all the seals (parts 100, 6 hrs labor @ 85 $/hr) <br />Any thoughts?<br />Thanks<br />Dave

I know this post is a little old, but I have been dealing w/ this problem for a while now. I have done searches on here and FS forum and it seems like a issue on a very large number of Yamahas from 70 - 90 hp. I have put alot of money into mine already and it still does same thing. The scary thing is mechanic had a tilt/ trim unit off used motor he gave me to try and it does same thing. Thats 2 units doing the EXACT same thing that I own and countless number I have read about in the forums. Would Yamaha care? Can anybody give anymore info on possible solutions. Thanks in advance.

hello<br /> that should have a 6h-1 unit. for slow drift down inspect the following.<br /> up main valve<br />up relief valve<br /> manual relese valve<br />trim piston orings<br />free piston<br />this unit really only require 2 special tools for disassembly and reassembly. the tools for the trim caps and tilt cap. <br /> 6 hours labor on a 2001 model is kinda high.<br /> the mains are identical and removable without dissasembling the unit. if you have time are are technically inclined its not a bad one to deal with. you can swap the main valves or pull them and have them tested at the dealership.they dont make a seal "kit" but the seals and back up rings are fairly inexpensive. the main valves are not :) <br />what part of the world are you located in ?

Rodbolt<br />Thanks for the reply. Like justfish, I have seen several other motors with the same problem. It has been suggested to me that dirt gets in the seals, and they need to be cleaned out (high labor costs as above). Another mechanic recommended replacing the whole unit--definitely too much $$.<br />I have heard about needing to "bleed" the system by tilting it up and down several times, then holding the tilt button ON at full UP tilt, etc.<br />None of these measures have worked.<br />Boat will be in the Keys all spring/summer; then in Charleston, SC in fall. <br />Not afraid to drive to NC. ;) <br />Dave

I can't begin to match rodbolt's knowledge but I have owned a 90 and a 70 and they both did the same thing. They would bleed down under way or every once in a while just sitting in the driveway. One thing seemed to work and what I think I remember them doing was replacing ballbearings in the valves. Maybe I'm way off here but they did greatly improve the problem. Perhaps this will trigger someone else's memory, but I am sure there is a remedy. RT
