I have a 1996 Yamaha 150hp carbed motor. Went out for a ride last night and on my way in the overheat alarm sounded. I shut it down right away and let it cool off for 45 min. I tilted up the motor and saw the intake was clogged with seaweed/slipgut. I removed the clog and fired it up after the block was cool enough to keep my hand on it. She ran fine and the water out of the pee-hole was cool. I kept it under 2k rpms with the cover off and got back in ok. I am planning on doing a compression test this weekend. I did one two weeks ago and it was perfect on all cylinders.

My question is if compression comes back ok and I continue to get good temp and flow out of the pee-hole is there any necessary repairs I should make now? ie stats, gaskets, water pump?

Re: Yamaha 96 150hp overheat alarm

Any ideas? Searched all over this site and can't find the answer. I'm afraid of doing further damage. Any help would be appreciated Thx

depends on if the pump ran dry or was just restricted but had enough water to keep the impeller and housing cool.

I agree, it all depends on how much blockage there was.
Pull the pump and inspect/ replace as needed. Make sure you inspect the pump housing real well. I have seen a 35 hp Johnson melt the impeller into a small blob from sea weed and housing warped real bad
