Yamaha C90 2 stroke telltale

finally got around to starting it up this year. Engine turned over almost immediately. But same ole, same ole. No pissing from the double ear earmuffs with the garden hose draped over the transom and some water squirted in (as a primer, lol) through the **** hole.
Just like last year and the year before I ended up raising the OD, sticking it into a garbage can which I filled with water. Turned over without any choke at all and telltale pissing just like brand new. Now I put those muffs over the "vents" just above the skeg and prop, but there are another set of vents just above the anti cavitation plate. I thought those higher vents were exhaust though, and did not need to be submerged or "muffed." Anyone ? ( I can't have been doing too much wrong, the Sea Pro and the Yamaha are 1999s, bought new, but the fact that the first time every year (and only the first time) that I have to do the garbage can trick just mystifies me. )

Mine is a 1999 C90 also...the only time my tell-tale has stopped showing water flow has been an obstruction in tell-tale tube or head fitting....fairly easy to open up with some monofilament/weed eater line....if yours isn't working with the muffs then maybe drop lower unit and inspect pump impeller, body, wear plate, water tube grommet, thermostat and pressure control valve....maybe something is just not right with one or more of these items...

yet the odd thing is that after the first time each year, I do not need to do the garbage pail trick

Maybe spiders, bugs, wasps, etc. building nests in the openings....maybe put tape over the openings during the off-season?

well, I am back with another impeller or telltale issue:

OK, and before you guys tell me to just change the impeller, has anyone ever had the telltale **** well for 15-20 seconds then stop? I shut the engine down, spray some water up the pisshole, then start it again. Everything is great for 15-20 seconds again, then nothing. I immersed the C-90hp in a garbage pail of water, so its not the muffs which only seem to work well after the first start of the spring. Thoughts ?

something is plugging it up.
keep blowing compressed air or as you tried water up it while running to see if you can get it moved around or flushed out completely

will treat like when I get a kidney stone. try to catch the telltale in a clean pail of water and see if something comes out !

(I am a little concerned that I will burn things up if I wait to long to shut it down when it stops pissing.)

well if you are afraid that the water pump is stopping pumping water to cool the motor then drop the lower unit and inspect the pump

Are you sure you have good pressure on garden hose?....mine had a kink in it enough to restrict flow....

Maybe remove the thermostat and pressure control valve for inspection.....4 10MM bolts on top back of motor...real easy to remove/inspect/clean/replace....
