Claims that this will relieve dealers of the burden of matching boat year with outboard year.

Hmmm, I don't think they'll be allowed to do so here in Australia - our consumer protection laws will see to that! Still, it'll be interesting if they try.

merc has not designated by model year in at least 35 years. so its no worries. some seriel number runs incorperate 2 and 3 years of models.coimes from sometimes a manufatuer will order 3 or 4 hundred power packages to get a good deal and it may take 2 years to build and rig all the hulls.

Engine will still have date of mfg , I think.

The engines will still have a "born on" date from what I've read elsewhere.
