Have a 1995 200 TXRT outboard

Engine was running fine. I was out fishing and all of a sudden the engine went into ?safe mode?, would just idle and not take gas. The engine was still spraying water through the block, no warning lights but a buzzer kept going off. Slowly I got the boat home, checked the compression and had between 112 and 120 in the cylinders. Took out the thermostats, reset the computer with the little toggle switch attached to it off I went. The engine will idle just fine but as soon as I give it gas, it goes into safe mode. I am not afraid to get into the repair end of it so if you can give me some ideas, I will give it a try. Whatever you suggest, give me an idea where it is located on the engine.

Thanks

Gene

Re: Yamaha engine problem

a loose battery cable or low system voltage can trigger an alarm, are you running the yamaha digital tach?
there are about 8 ways to set the audible on yamaha outboards. you found one :)

Toggle switch is the manual switch for the oil tank pump. You reset the system by turning the key off, then back on.
Only low oil in the engine tank, high water temp will set off the alarm. Loose battery cable will put it in slow mode but no alarm if I remember correctly but I could be wrong.

Re: Yamaha engine problem

I checked the oil, it is full. I changed the gas filter, cleaned the plugs and run a trickle charger on both batteries. The engine starts fine on both batteries. If the engine did run hot, what sensor will continually set the engine into slow or safe mode? The engine starts and idles just fine. Its not taking the throttle at speeds more than idle that perplexes me. Thanking you in advance for your reply.

Re: Yamaha engine problem

You said your oil tank is full. Are you using any oil? The buzzer might be going off because the engine is hot as a result of not getting the proper oil mixture. You might need a new oil pump.
