I have a 2004 F225 Yamaha and for the second time the idle air control motor must be replaced. This time the dealer looked for a cause and found that the vent hose from the vapor separator to the latch on the cover fitting is clogged with dried salt. The dealer contacted Yamaha but got no help.
Has anyone had this problem or no of a solution aside from only running in fresh water?

Is salt build-up a factory defect? They didn't put it there. No parts or labor defects. I have no clue how a vapor separator vent could affect an IAC. It's like blaming a flat tire for a blown transmission.

After sleeping on this, I can see where a clogged VST vent could cause symptoms very similar to a bad IAC. Except that the IAC only affects engine performance at idle. As soon as you give it any throttle, the IAC is essentially disabled. The symptoms should go away with throttle. With a clogged VST vent, the problem would get worse with increased throttle. I think your dealer may have misdiagnosed the situation and may have replaced a good IAC. Then again it could be a paralel failure. The same salt that clogged the vent could've caused an IAC failure and any number of other corrosion issues. We see that all the time up here in the snow belt. Salt used on the roads is probably the leading cause of IAC failures up here.

Willy-The first time the engine would not slow below about 1000rpm. Hard docking. This time: would not start unless throttle was foreward and start at 3000rpm and then stall while pulling throttle back. Boat ran good for a few months after replacing the IAC the first time. Have not gotten the boat back this time but they tell me they have disconnected the vent from the bottom of the cowling to keep the saltwater from getting in. It looks like Yamaha made a design change in 2005 but can't get them to talk to the dealer.

the VST has absolutly nothing to do with the ISC.
absolutly nothing.
the ISC gets its air from behind the rear plastic cover held on by 4 allen bolts.
the VST vent is just that, a vent.
have ya ever tried keeping the motor cleaned?
yamaha went trhough great pains to try to seal the cowls, however you still have to let air in, a lot of air. most salt issues are motor/hull and operator error issues.
if,when slowing downg you douche your motor experiment with the throttle and steering to prevent it. also look carefully at the engine at planing speeds. sometimes a motor to low or a transducer will shoot water into the cowling.
also have the dealer check the lower pan drains.
but think about it, if you drove your pickem up through the surf for ten or 12 miles then just parked it a few weeks how long would it last ?
