YAMAHA F80 or SUZUKI DF80

I am about to change my outboard (nissan 40-2 stroke) with a new four stroke outboard..

After a long research..i think the 4 stroke 80/90 HP models although a bit heaver then the new 2 stroke Mercury OPTIMAX or TOHATSU TDLI 90 i still better. I was about to buy the TOHATSU TDLI 90 for wieght & economy. But as TOHATSU are not well know yet i decided to go for a better well know brand.

Now as the SUZUKI are launching the DF80 for 2009...i came in a confusion which outboard to get - the YAMAHA F80 or the SUZUKI DF80?

when was the yamaha f80 launched?

I it true that 4 stroke are more reliable but maintaince is more costly then the2 stroke?

which is the best buy & good value 4 stroke outboard to get?

I am right to get a four stroke rather the new DI 2 stroke engines i mentioned?


My boat is a 16 feet RASCALA Max at about rated at 55.7 Kw?

noe173, are you in Europe or Australia? Thats the only place I've found an F80 on line?

I love my Yamahas, but Suzuki have a good reputation. I would shop shop for the best price and warranty, but the honesty and quality of service of the dealer counts for something.

I would go 4 stroke, change the oil every 100 hours against the price of mixing good 2 stroke oil must be about the same.

The F80 is an efficient, quiet and poweful motor, but heavier of course. The 4 stroke carbs dont like too much crap in the fuel. it doesn't take much to cook a piston if one of the carbs are down; and the tune up work is just a tad involved than the 2 strokes - if you are prompt in your maintenacne schedules no problems, if you are like me, and leave for the next day, then i recommend the 2 stroke. I no nothing about Suzuki.

Suzuki four strokes have an excellent reputation for quality and durability. However, as with any purchase it is wise to chose a name brand with a good local or nearby service facility. You can't go wrong with either Yamaha or Suzuki. I think it is far to early to debate the reliability and long term durability of four stroke engines vs two strokes. When four strokes get to be 20, 30 and 40 years old, only then will one be able to debate this issue. Check the outboard forums and you will find many 1960's and older two-stroke outboards still in regular service and other than routine repairs have never seen a major overhaul. I have a Suzuki on my new pontoon and while it has only 25 hours on it, it is a very nice engine.
