I was told that the Yamaha 225 and the Mercury 225 four stroke engines are identical. Is this true or lip service. Basically, is the mercury a yamaha motor in the case of a Mercury?
Thanks
michael

Whats the reasoning behind this? Is Merc using Yammie parts?? I dont get it, why would Yamaha stoop to such a level??

There are a few reasons for this.
1-the various government agencies (mainly the EPA)has established new emission standards for all marine engines sold in the US.Basically that means the want Hydrocarbon's reduced by 8 1/3% per year for 9 years(after 2008 they will come up with more cuts I'm sure)
2- this means the manufactures had to go away from old 2 stroke technology and quick. All the manufactures had their own DFI and 4 strokes in the works but to engineer a engine from scratch costs allot more then paying another company for the rights or license to use their engines.
So to make a long story shorter Merc entered into a agreement with Yamaha( 5 years I think) to use their engines on Merc exhaust housing with Merc gearcases .75,90,115 hp Merc engines are Yamaha powerheads, the 225 Merc 4 stk is all Yamaha from skeg up.This gives Merc time to developed there own engines without the throwing engines out into the field and having another Ficht or Optimax fiasco. Also all the lower hp 4stk Merc engines are made by Tohatsu.
Bombardier and Suzuki have a similar agreement with there 4stk engines.
The next big thing early next year is the unveiling of Mercury's own designed high horsepower 4 stk.

Wow, you learn something new everyday. Are the Mercury 225 4 strokes retailing for the same price or are they less/more? Here is where you learn if you are paying for a name or a product. If Mercury is selling for less then Yamaha is marking up for their name.

Re: Yamaha/Mercury 225 4 strokes

My guess is you will find few companies willing to design a competitive 4-stroke engine from scratch without any previous experience. The tooling and design costs are much higher with the high output 4-strokes because of the higher number of moving parts and tolerances. Its cheaper to buy one from somebody who has experience. Even the Big 3 auto makers in the USA bought their small overhead cam engines from foreign automakers for years (some still do) rather than retool for the more modern engines right away, and the volume of small cars far exceeds the number of outboards sold. Suzuki, Honda, and Yamaha have years of experience producing high output 4-stroke motorcyle and auto engines in addition to direct experience with 2-stroke outboards.

All fourstrokes are made off shore. Not in the USA. No matter what the cover has for a decal. Japan. All.
