Yamaha muti funct. tach

I own a 1987 Yamaha 115. I am rebiulding the existing dashboard in the boat and with everything accesable, I thought I'd investigate why my tachometer works intermittantly. How might I isolate the problem from either the gauge, the control box, or a connection at the engine itself?<br />Thanks for your time.<br /> - Walter

Walt, does the tach lose power or just read incorrectly? If it loses power check the tach harness (yellow wire) connections. They can and will corrode from time to time. If it is losing it's signal I believe that is the green wire but I need to check my manual to be sure. Also check connections at the voltage regulator. Good luck. Those guages rarely fail. At least in my neighborhood.
