Lose the ether Dave. It's murder on 2 stroks. It has no lube in it and washes the oil out of every where it needs to be. It ya gotta prime it use a squirt can of premix. As far as your engine not starting cold, I suspect you don't have the priming bulb pumped up or you're not using enough choke (primer).

c/6

Hooty

Hello, Dave.

Hooty is on the spot. Ether will turn your Yammy into junk very quickly.

I also agree that your cold start enriching system is not working properly. I don't know if your engine uses chokes or primers, but my '92 Yammy 130 will not start cold unless the chokes are engaged and the carb bowls are full.

When you start, do you pump the primer bulb until firm and then push the key in to choke it? Do you hear a click from the engine when you do? Take a look and confirm that the choke butterflies are fully closed when you push the key.

Let us know what you find. :)

BTW, this is the wrong forum for engine questions. Ask engine questions on the Engines and Motors forum.

Re: YAMAHA ONLY STARTS WITH ETHER

I have found that on any hard to start engine the best thing for it is gum-out. It sounds stupid
but every time I have tried it on an engine that would not start it would start it right up. Instead of just pouring it into the gas tank I put the end of the bulb into the bottle and give it a few squeezes then reconnect the fuel line, and pour some additional into the gas tank. After it has started let it run awhile.

Does the motor have a manual choke override? If it does, you might try cold starting it with the choke set manually in the "on" position (full choke). After it fires you can switch the choke off, or run it a bit with the choke on until the engine warms up. This change in starting procedure might be all you need.

Thank-you, your suggestions worked. Pulled the manual choke out, cranked a couple of times and it turned over--No ether. Now I have to figure out why the electric choke has not been getting fuel to the engine. Thanks again!!
