I have a 200hp 1993 yamaha. I got back from a fishing trip last weekend and i started rinsing the engine only to find it was not peeing and was beginning to overheat. I thought it was the waterpump so i dropped the foot to look at the water pump. The impellor was just fine so i pulled the thermostats and they seemed fine also. So blew a little compressed air through the system while i had the foot off and i could feel air coming out the pee hole. So i put it back together and started it up. Still doesn't pee any water. Help me please! I MUST FISH!

How do you know it was beginning to overheat?

Could your water inlets be clogged on the sides of the lower unit, I have a 2003 and the inlet covers are a very tight mesh and I often find lake weeds in it.

Re: Yamaha overheat problem

check your pressure relief valve. if the leak or stick open it will overheat at idle especially on the muffs. also remove the tell tale hose and verify its not sand clogged.<br /> good luck and keep posting

Re: Yamaha overheat problem

It was beginning to overheat because the alarm was going off and the heads were hot as hell. Water inlets are clear. What is the tell tale hose? Where is the pressure relief valve?

The poppet valve is located at the bottom center of the exhaust plate on the back of the engine with a large hose attached. Take the two bolts out and remover the plastic valve. Clean both the valve and rubber seal in the block it fits into. Pay attention when dissasembling as to direction the valve goes. You may have to replace the gasket when reassembling.

If the poppet valve is clogged or bad would that keep it from peeing water?

Re: Yamaha overheat problem

It can if something has it stuck open enough. Water will go right out it instead of through passages in head and block.

Poppet valve was just fine. It looked like it was closing and sealing. I might just have to break down and send it in somewhere. This sucks.

Re: Yamaha overheat problem

Since this problem appeared on the hose and you have checked the normal problem areas in the cooling system, you need to drop the gearcase and remove the pump housing. If it does not seal properly it can cause this problem. Remove the o ring and set it on a perfectly flat surface. If there are any gaps between the base of the pump and the housing. It will not seal correctly and pump while on the house. It may still work in the water, but if you idle much it will be a problem there. Use of silicone type sealents when installing can actually cause the problem. Good Luck.
