This is my first post on this forum, which I have found very interesting so far.
I have a 04 Yamaha 90hp that has a garden hose connector to flush the motor and is very convient. My question is can you run the motor at idle with the garden hoses attached, or is this not enough cooling for the motor? The manual does not say either way, but I thought I read that you should not do this.
What is Yahama best service manual for this motor or is their somthing more comprehesive and cost effective.
Thanks for any help
Regards
Ed

The flushing water does not go through the water pump, Ed.

Though it should adequately cool the powerhead, it will run the impeller dry and ruin it.

For a single engine shop like yours, the Factory Service manual is always best.

Good luck. :)

JB, Thanks for the information on the water pump, It would be a shame to have ruined a pump on a new motor. I will get the yamaha manual.
If I could ask you one more question on winter storage. Do you run the fuel out of your engines before storage or do you leave treated fuel in the motor?
Thanks again for your respones
Regards,
Ed

I am one who leaves treated fuel in the tank and in the carbs, Ed, but many people swear by dry carbs.

I don't think there is a correct answer, but some folks will be along shortly to explain why their approach is best. :)

the new school of thought on fuel tanks is empty.
the reason for this is the larger amount of alchohol in fuel. alchohol will absorb water over time causing a buildup over the winter period. condensation in a empty tank is likely also. the key is to have a good water sep filter and service it in the spring.
your 90 has carb drains and can be drained easily at those points. dont run it dry, some of the residual lubrication is burnt in a lean running engine.
