I have a brand new 50 hp Yamaha and the boat didn't have a tach so I asked the salesman when buying about it, he selectse one off the shelf and we put it on. After pickup I read in the manual about oil level indicators on the tack and search to find two models of tach, one w and one wo the oil level indicators. Since I havnt run the boat I call and ask about upgrading it, they have the oil indicator in stock too, and he tells me I cant just swap it out, that a 150.00 harness has to be purchased, and I cant get the new tach and use the tach feature alone for now and add the harness later because with the oil indicator tach the special harness is required to operate anything.

These are analog tachs. I will get to the bottom of this, but will see him this aft. Is he giving me a straight story??

Here is a link to the two tachs(analog gauges)
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/accessories/acsubcontaineritems/5/318/1138/8783/all/2.aspx

Thanks

look at the price of the complete single gauge kit. its usually much cheaper than individual parts.
its in the rigging guide and the kit contents are described
