I usually change my lower unit oil every 6 months. Only had this boat 6 months though. When I bought it, I changed it. Checked it a couple of times and it was full. Spun the prop by hand the other day it was just a slight bit rough feeling. No play though.
It was time, so I changed the grease. The old grease didn't have any metalic in it, but, it was "black". Not "milky" looking at all...just black.
I do use this boat quite a bit though. Just never seen this color on any other motor I've had. Should I be concerned? OR is this normal and I need to change it more often.

"Most" lower unit oil will look black even after only a couple of uses. If no metal pieces came out with the lube you're fine, tiny metal flakes are normal as well.

Wonder where the chunks went?
Last two times out been wondering about that noise that sounded like a nod rocking. Hard to pinpoint since it was a come and go knock while in gear. Pulled up to load the boat and liked to not have gotten into reverse.
Curiosity got the best of me. Pulled what I would call the rear ring gear just to see which bearing was a "bit rough".
I have no idea how this boat moved at all. I see a few good teeth....not much left of the others.
Anybody got an good recomendations.
97 Yamaha 150 V-max.
