I know this is kind of a general question with each motor probably having several models.

For freshwater use, are there any differences other than horsepower, that would make any of you choose one over the other? Reliability, maintenance issues, quirks, replacement parts costs, etc.

Have the opportunity to purchase either motor (each with a boat which is an issue on its own) that are 2003 models. Besides the usual prechecks that will be done, i.e. compression, etc., I was just curious to see what is the general opinion of each of these motors from people on this board.

Thanks!

Re: Yammy 90 vs 115

They are very different engines.

The 90 is a 3 cylinder inline, light for a 90 and highly tuned to get 90hp from only 70 ci. It will use less fuel and be anemic on hole shot compared to the 115.

The 115 is a V4 of about 105ci. Heavier with LOTS more torque at low and transition speeds. It would be thirstier.

Both are very reliable engines. Maintenance and parts costs are in the same ballpark.

Which to choose? That depends entirely on what boat and what priorities it needs to fit.

Good luck. :)

Thanks JB!

That is pretty much the type of info I was looking for. I know not much about Yamaha motors other than people I know who have them do like them very much. I've been mostly a Merc man over the years but am not against trying out the Yammies.

I guess we're probably talking about roughly a couple of gallons or so per hour gas consumption difference at WOT between these two motors from what I've read on here.

I can live with either one (boat and motor) so I guess it will be whichever package is the best deal and/or motor checks out the best.

Thanks again for the info! Any other opinions out there?

Every local mechanic I have talked with said go Yaamha. I bought a merc 90-why? Im frugal and saved several thousand. Figure the merc's "good enough".

Time will tell.
Good luck.
