Hi all,

I have a Yamaha F150 with analog guages. The Spedometer is intermitent.

Where does the Spedometer get the input from? I don't see a Pitot or wheel anywhere???

Could it be electrical?

if you have no hull mounted pitot odds are its using the one on the leading edge of the gearcase, its prone to debris clogging it.
a speedo is a usless instrument on a boat and nothing would make me happier than if W banned them.
however I do make a lot of money fixing them :) :) \

Yes almost like Social Security to unplug them knowing they will only get replugged until the owner finally gives up and buys a GPS if he feels he has to have that information.

rodbolt - Guess you're right, I don't race I fish and I dont fish in tourniments so I dont need to race from point A to B and what would the spedometer do for me anyway.

Just cant stand having something broken on my boat.

Ray - I have a GPS and a Fishfinder that has a wheel on the transducer. Funny thing when the Spedo was working NOT ONE of the three read the same speed!

I'm also interested in learning how things work since this is my first boat.

I would trust the GPS over the paddle whel or pitot tube methods of speed measurements.
even fishing a tournement I cant see the need for a speedometer. a tachometer yes, hull speed no.
only places that really need a speedometer are certain lakes with speedlimits. I have a friend that was banned from lake gaston once for 3 years. last ticket he got they mailed it to him cause he outran the fish cops.
however their camera caught his hull ID :) :)
so far in my area there are no speed limits. speed is limited here by wallet size.

Re: Yammy F150 Spedometer

I had the same problem with my F150. As rodbolt said, the pitot tube is on the leading edge of the gearcase. You gotta look for it a little. I'ts small. If you hit a stick or something at speed, it will plug the hole.

I cleared mine by using a drill bit by hand. The drill bit worked because I could screw the drill bit into the hole, then pull out the debris. Then I blew compressed air backward through the hose leading to the speedo. Fixed it right up.

As you point out, they are fixable. The problem is that many times the fix can take longer than the fix lasts.

I cannot believe how SMALL the dang hole is!!!

No wounder it gets clogged.

Maybe I should replace my Spedo Guage with a water temp or oil temp guage. Do they come in the same size as the Spedo?

Is it worth doing something like that?
