hello,
i have a '93 yam v4 115 on my 20' bowrider. I was planning on upgrading to a 135-150hp o/b range. Someone recently mentioned that 115 & 130hp yamahas are the same engine with exception of the carbs. If thats true, can I buy the bigger carbs and mount them on my motor? Do you think there would be any noticable gains? I was thinking between larger carbs and ss prop maybe i'll see some more performance...if not, time to continue my used outboard search.
thanks

You may see some slight difference, but may actually see worse performace from your 115 if you do that. The difference between 115's and 130's is usually more than just carbs. There could be different reeds behind the carbs, there is probably diffferent porting and exhaust tuning.

Even if you are going to switch motors, you will probably see almost no difference from a 115 to a 130, in some cases a 115 will have better low end, hence a better hole shot, so it will feel more powerful than the 130.

Most times slight HP increases like 115-130 are just slight adjustments they made to let it put a slight bit more power out at WOT so that they were allowed to make a 130hp sticker to put on the engine and market it as a 130.

You're better off stepping up to the next actual size engine, like a 150, if your boat can handle it.

Re: Yamy 115 vs 130 carbs

thanks for the info! Most likey if i upgrade, i'll be looking for a late 90's Yam or Merc 150hp. do you think it will be a noticeable and worthwhile upgrade? i'd be looking at an extra 35hp from what i have now. My boat is a 20' fiberglass bowrider weighing in at around 2000lbs. I mostly just cruise/tube/fish with 3-4 adults. i dont need a race boat, but i def want enough power when i have friends/weight in the boat. appreciate your opinions!

i've been looking at ss props on ebay in the $150-300 range. Would it be worth the money on a 115? Any noticable change in performance with OB of this size?

Don't waste your money on a SS prop for that motor. That boat is underpowered with a 115. The 130 is ported and exhaust tuned but will not give you the performance you need. A V6 motor is what that hull needs. You will not believe the difference it will make. The 150 Yamaha is a great motor. And if you can find a 150 ProV even better... more like 165 HP.
