I'm looking to move to the northern end of the ICW in NC.

Any thoughts from anyone from up north who moved to the general area?

Thanks.

My family and I moved from New York to Alabama back in the late 80's, to be around the father's side of the family. I miss New York sometimes though. Been to NC once to visit, couldn't help ya on the move. I say best of luck to ya. Although you get allot of northerners moving from up north to Florida.

Re: Yankee moving south

I noticed that the people from N.C. have a severe dislike for outsiders taking over their state. People from the area often say the dislike is really for the people of Florida who move there; however, the people moving out of Florida were generally from "up-north" to begin with. They are called "half backs."

When my father and mother were considering moving to NC after 28 years in Florida, they actually had a real estate agent tell them "we really dont want you here or people from florida here either. You won't fit in." (true story)

Much like Florida, NC has become a high place to live. Real Estate prices have soared, and the taxes and home owners insurance have become very expensive. With all the people leaving Florida, these problems are not going to get any better.

The best advice I can give is that people from the south generally are not as stupid as they seem.... ;)

I resemble that remark.

Yep me to I think. Uhh what was we talking bout anyway?lol Oh OK I remember now.

Round here they say if'n ya don't like grits &the such you're in the wrong place. We got us a feller what moved here from Detroit and after 10 years he's now just barely tolerable. But he ain't your average Yankee he ketches on purdy quick.:D (But he still talks funny) So all I can add to the advice portion is don't go wandering off in the woods by yerself on acount there are a few stills left down here.

But really, Ya'll come on down & git yerself a nice place and enjoy.
Best -o- luck to ya

All, thanks for the feedback. Still looking at areas and reviewing options.

I'm just at the point where the snow and cold is a royal pita, but 110 degrees is not my concept of fun either.

The temps we had this past summer are not the norm they were well above average. I'm a bit southwest of your target area but I enjoy the same weather for the most part that is.

I transplanted myself from upstate NY to western NC 14 years ago. best move I ever made. I'm over here in the mountains where it very rarely gets hot. It took me a while to fit in with the locals but now I don't even think about it. I noticed that the locals keep you at an arms length away until they build trust in you, then you will find they are the best people around.

Treat the people with respect, try to understand their traditions, be open minded. I have been living in Charlotte, nc for 10 years now, and hunting and fishing all arournd NC and SC. Treat them nice, be honest and they will give you the same. Also, dotn take the yankees jokes seriously, they are just looking for a little payback, they mean no harm y'all!

Nandy, that reminds me of a saying my mom used to say to all of our new friends on their first visit to our house. "if ya ain't at home ya oughta be" she scared off a few but most of'um knew what she really ment.

That about sums in up.....
When moving south, learn t LIVE the lifestyle, not change it to what you want it to be. And yes, you will hear the best "yankee" jokes in the land. I wish I would of moved here years before I did.

Talking about accent. I LOVE the southern accent, that drawl is so much like a song. Oh, and them southern girls, just listen to MR. Trace Adkins "Southern Hallelujah" song. That will sum it up. I will be quiet now or I will get in trouble!

I moved from NJ to Florence SC several years back. Although we are back in NJ it was not due to the hospitality down south. Made some good friends even with the short time that we were there. Good Luck in your search.
