I have an older 53-59 motor with a serial # of 7520-08389. I need to know the year and if a water pump housing and impeller are available. I may be a ble to reuse the housing, but the impeller is shot.

Thanks Skywatch@verizon.net

Your engine is a 1956 7.5hp Evinrude. The complete water pump kit is still available from any Evinrude/Johnson dealership, and possibly at your local NAPA dealer at a more reasonable cost. The OMC part number is 391391.

Thanks for the info Joe. I knew there was bound to be one of you veteran techs out there. I can work on em, but preferr working on airplanes. I'll see if one of the local parts places around the Tampa/St. Pete area stocks the water pump.

Thanks again, and smooth seas!

Dennis

Hey Joe, if you have a parts manual for this ting, I also need a power head gasket and the stainless roll pin that goes through the drive shaft that positions the spring and seal.

Also when I pulled this thing apart, the spring etc. went flying across the shop. I'm not sure how the spring, brask ring with the two littel bumps on it and the plastick seal go in. I can see that the block seal goes on top, but not sure from there. Let me know if you can help.

Thanks,

Dennis

Skywatch I just bought a new water pump and impeller at the dealer for around $40. The thing is that the old housing and impeller was a volume pump and the new one is a pressure pump. Take a look at the pictures I took you will see the size difference. Water pump change

Hi Skywatch,
The order of assembly for the lower powerhead seal is the brass cup washer goes on top of the roll-pin in the shaft, followed by the spring, followed by the carbon seal (cup side down, o-ring side up), followed by the metal washer with the lip on it, followed by the lower seal/gasket.
- If you have remnants of the old powerhead base gasket, you may be able to use it as a template to cut a new gasket, as the ones that I've seen available are slightly different and will restrict water flow. Won't take but a few minutes with a good pair of scissors and a hole punch...
- Scott

Thanks guys for the info. Chine, I think I'll make a gasket as you suggested. Vox; I can see the difference in the old and new pumps. Are all the new ones that samll; pressure as opposed to volume? Can I just get a new impeller and resuse the old housing?

Thanks,

Skywatch

I'm not sure what they will give you if you order just an impeller. I ordered the whole kit and that is what I got. At first I thought they gave me the wrong one because it was too small, but was informed by a friend the the new "pressure" type was better. I guess there has to be some truth behind what he said. after all the did change the design. You may want to ask the dealer what is available and what he recommends.

Cheers,

Thanks Vox. Yeah, I got a quote from Outboards Parts online of $40 for the entire kit, but a local retired OMC tech says that man NAPA stores along the coast here in Florida also carry those old parts. go figure. I'll probably just go with the whole new pump as I plan on using this little boy as my backup when offshore. It has already brought me home from 12 miles out several years ago. It fits neatly into the doghouse on my 19 foot center console.

Thanks again,

Skywatch aka Dennis
