year for 4.5 hp merc.

I have a 4.5 hp merc outboard given to me by a family member and i have no idea what year it could be. The serial number reads 843-8693 and the decales are brown horizontail stripes with white lettering. Any help determining the model year would be much appreciated

I don't see any serial numbers in the format you have given on the chart I have been using for model year ID. Even combining the numbers together to form a typical serial number does not seem to match anything really under 4.5HP. Are you sure that is the serial number?

Hi...<br /><br />The brown stripes were from the 80's, so at least you can narrow down the decade <br /><br />If you want to see decals to compare, I have just added a picture of a 1984 50HP posted in another topic here call 'Merc 50HP leaking Oil'.
