I have just aquired a Golen Viking 25' houseboat. It's a Merc 80hp 4 stroke and the serial# is 5645965. I would like to know what year it is as I need to rebuild it, if parts are not too hard to come by. If rebuilding it is out of the question, does anyone know other engine which might replace it without refit? Thanks.

dewey893@hotmail.com

Don't you have Any paper work (Registration?) on the Boat ??????
IF it's a GM block, It's Either a 153cid, 2.5l, 120hp.. Or a 181cid, 3.0l, 140hp.....
IF the boat is a Pre-1985, you have a Model 1, or pre-Alpha1, Mercruiser.... Post 1985 is the Alpha1 drive... 1993 is the year of the Alpha1 Gen II.....
If it's an 80hp, It's a Renault engine in front of a Model 0 Mercruiser outdrive.....

"bondo" thankyou for your input. I inherited the boat(gee I thought he liked me, lol) and unfortuanately there were no papers to be found. I have found out that the engine was used by Merc to some degree from'66 to '69, and that they no longer carry parts for it. The local GM dealer figures it's a 2.5 litre and has sent for a parts manual, so my fingers are crossed. Any other thoughts or comments are greatly appreciated and I will keep you posted on any findings.

I'll Bet this is what you're looking at.....
If this IS the case, Don't waste your time...
Repower with a Newer Driveline.....

"bondo" the engine has GM stamped on it and I think you hit the nail on the head when you suggested it may be a 153cid. I unnderstand that they were used in early 60's Chevy's and were used by Merc long after GM stopped putting them into cars. The engine also shares alot of internal parts with the old 230 6 cyl.

In that case, You have the 120hp motor....
Probably a Mod.1 Outdrive.....
Parts are reasonably common for them Both...
Depending on what your problems are, It's Very Easy to update this engine to the more common 3.0l...
And the Mod.1 drive is as good as the Alpha1 Anyday in your application.... Parts are Very Common,+ Easy to find....
Go to the top of this page,+ Click on Manuals.... You'll learn alot about your system with a manual.....

"bondo", the 80hp thing had me scratching my head. It was on a plate on the engine cover, but it could possibly be that this is not the original engine. I am going to take your advice and look into upgrading to the 3.0L. Thankyou!!!

Re: Year of MerCruiser I/O?

My aunt came by today with some old receipts she had found for the boat. One of the receipts was for a rebuilt OMC 120 rebuilt engine (ser# M09067NCD). So I'm sure what we have here is the GM 153 ci with the Merc outdrive.
