yet ANOTHER impeller question

So..... I replaced my Alpha one Gen II Impeller recently. I did this work using the manual the I have (#18). Nowhere in there does it mention putting perfect seal on the gaskets, so naturally I didn't.

Then, today I was perusing this document: http://www.4shared.com/document/eEm9dw5y/A1G2_Raw_water_pump_repair.html?
And noted the recommendation for perfect seal. My top gasket had a red ring around the perimeter of it where it contacts the housing. I greased up the bolts and torque them to 7.5 ft-lb instead of 5 since I had greased them. I also found that the face seal wasn't in great shape, but the Sierra kit I got didn't include a new.one, so I put it back together as is.

So my question is do I need to take the sucker apart again for the sealant? Does the fact that the face seal isn't great affect your opinion?

Thanks on advance!

Re: yet ANOTHER impeller question

Howdy,

The following would bother me a little......

1. Apply Quicksilver Perfect Seal to the small hole gasket. Place the small hole gasket, the
face plate and the large hole gasket onto the gear case.
NOTE: Add Quicksilver Perfect Seal to the gasket to seal it and prevent water from seeping
into the gear housing.

I would do it like the service manual recommends. If that means pulling it apart and REPLACING the gaskets, then so be it.

Cheers,

Rick

That is an engine manual, and does not give any information on replacing the impeller in the outdrive.
The link you posted is info from the manual for the outdrive (#14 for the Gen II drives).
Take your boat for a test run, if you don't have a problem with overtemp above 3000 rpm, you don't have to worry about not using the sealer. One other thing the sealer does, is prevent corrosion on the lower housing.

Yeah, as soon as I got home and saw the manual on the counter I realized I got the engine and outdrive #s mixed up. The hardcopy I have has ne reference to the sealant.

So if I were doing the sealant, would it be: lower unit, sealant, small hole gasket, sealant, wear plate, sealant, large hole gasket sealant, housing? Or just sealant, small hole, plate, large hole, sealant, housing?

Re: yet ANOTHER impeller question

Light coat of sealant on both sides of the small hole gasket only. Per the instructions.
