I have a 1998 bayliner capri 1850 with a mercruiser 4.3 190hp. It has the stock prop on it i am unsure of what pitch it is and the diameter, but when i looked at it, the last three characters say 23P.Does that mean the pitch is 23? The only other thing the boat has is a sting ray, hydro foil stabilizer. Anyways i am having some trouble getting out of the hole on a slalom. The boat has plenty of top end does about 45-50 between ~4700 rpms depending on water conditions trimmed up of course with few people in it. The weird thing is i can get up on one of the old skis that were in the boat (an old cypress garden wooden ski) on a deep water start. However, today i brought out a buddys connely, as well as his obrien ski to see which one i liked to purchase one from him and i could not get up for the life of me on either of them. I know they are a lot narrower and thinner so a boat needs a good bit of bottom considering i am close to 200lbs. But i can get up fine on the old wooden one im assuming because of the higher buoyancy and width etc.

with that being said i am looking to find a prop that can give my boat more bottom end for slaloming, wakeboarding etc so i do not have to be in the hole quite so long. What are some recommendations for replacements, i.e diameters, pitch, and manufacturers?

Yes, that's a 23" pitch prop. It's great for general boating around and speed, but is not good as a ski prop.

If you go to the iboats propeller section, you will see a Solas aluminum 4 blade(Amita) 14.25X19" pitch prop for under $100. That 4 blade prop will turn your dog(for ski pulling) into a serious ski machine.

You zero to 36 mph time will be about 7-8 seconds. Watch the rpm's when running that prop, as it will go past 4800. Since you'll be letting off the throttle at 36 mph anyway, it's not a problem. You should be running about 4300- 4500 rpm at 36 mph.

Most of us involved in water sports, especially skiing, have two props; one for general use, and the ski prop.

My Bayliner(a little bigger than yours), weighs around 4000 lbs and will jerk a skier from deep water using the Solas 14.5X17" pitch 4 blade prop. It'll still do over 40 mph(at 4800 rpm) with the ski prop, but you must watch the rpm to avoid over speeding the engine. Remember the "red line" for your 4.3 is 4800. :)

So is that a prop that would be uses mainly for skiing? Is there a prop that maybe might meet me in the middle, allowing me to still have good deep water starts, but also allowing me to not worry about the over rev as much?

could try a the same 4-blade mentioned in a 21", which would be right in the middle.

While the foil should help you it may be dragging a little at speed and could make it difficult to get the bow up when trimming up for speed. What ever you decide after testing they new prop, try it without the foil. The holes left behind shouldn't matter.
If you look over the stern at speed if you can see the foil it may not bother things. If it seems in the water its worth a try without.

The bow is up fine at speed I do not think the foul is impeding anything. So the. 21" prop mentioned will give me the out of the hole power neede while still maintaining the revs etc? If it were y'all do you feel the 19" or 21 would be better overall so far as usability while skiing, because like someone said they are easy to change and I always have the 23" to throw back f if water sports are not on the agenda for the day

The way I understood it that when stepping up to a 4 blade prop in order to be equal you must step down 1" in pitch. So would that mean a 21" 4 blade would be equal to a 22" 3 blade? Meaning the 3 blade setup I have now of 23" would almost be comparable to a 21" 4 blade? So would a 21" 4 blade Make that much different?

well i think like stated above the 21"p should not only makeup for the extra blade - but also one extra pitch which should drive your RPM's to near max rpm at WOT which is perfect. in my novice opinion.

So yes, that would be the mix of ski/normal you are looking for based on the little i know. Plus after market props are typically a little bit more high performance then stock (if you are).

Good luck

As someone stated i may end up with an assortment of props as well. Im just trying to decide whether i want to try the 21" or just got with the 19" that i know will give me the bottom and just watch my rpms:confused:
