order 2,000lb under carriage, came complete with lug nuts, bearings packed. took 15 minutes to assemble. cut 2 bolts on trailer, and just slide this one in, and tighten spring mount bolts. $180.00 Delivered Texas to Fl, etrailerpart.com. old pics first, and it rained last night.

4 inch frame 50 year old galvanized trailer, not destined to be a construction trailer. it was a salt water trailer.

Hey TD, Sweet! That will really dress the old trailer. I'm going to surf to the etrailer site soon. I may be up against the same chore soon.

Re: you wanted to see new axle assembly

Just went through the whole thing myself this past summer. Only I had to do mine in a ditch on the side of the road because the old bearing "welded" itself to the shaft. Whole unit $180 from Princess Auto. Wish I could have done mine on pavement too!

If anyone wants the funny story, they can continue reading.

As I said, trailer broke down, and the police wanted it OFF the roadway by that night. That gave me a few hours. Tried to hammer off the old bearing, but she wasnt going anywhere. Decided I would simply put a whole new shaft in. This is where the hydro would have been nice! Anyways, it was not happening before nightfall, so I decided I would tow it to the marina and fix it in the morning. Unfortunately, boat was too big for a flatbed. What did I do? Put a 3 ton jack under the faulty side of the driveshaft and ran along the road beside the boat holding the jacks handle while my father in law drove behind me for light, and a nice guy we met drove the truck towing. What a site that must have been! When the little tires on the jack finally melted off, I looked in the ditch and used an old chunk of hard wood, jammed it into the bolts for the u bolt, and away we go another few kms, Flintstones style! Mediocre, but it worked and saved myself a fine.

Boy do I wish I had a camera. The stares I got running alongside this boat using a jack as a tire were pretty funny.

i'm just going to flip this thing over, cut the 2 bolts, and in it goes, flip it back and start on the flat bed.

Re: you wanted to see new axle assembly

the axle is shot. too many years of the previous owner running it without grease caps, and salt water. the axle nut is rusted on.

Wow Hightrim, that's a hoot. Reminds me of a college days story, mid 70's, my roommate and still good bud couldn't get his Suburban to move. We thought it was the auto tranny. He had come in from a road trip, parked it and then wanted to go out for some suds. After it cooled off overnight, he decided to ditch/trade it in so we chained it to my 69 F100 and off we go across town to the Chevy dealer. About 1/2 block from the dealership, I look in the rearviews and see his rear axle and wheel threading out of the wheelwell...about a foot out already. We ease over to the curb, whip out the tractor jack that I always kept in the bed, raise the old dog-burban up and run the axle back in there. Good thing there was shrubbery along the road...if the guys at the dealership had seen that, he wouldn't a got a cent for it on trade. That was a real beast...454, quadrajet, bored out to 472...you could literally watch the gas gauge needle drop as you drove it...about 6-8 mpg. Oh man.

installation took about 30 minutes including new lights. ready for the flat bed to be put on. took longer to cut the old parts off, than to install.

Thanks TD for posting this. I'll have the same chore to do this season. Doesn't look too bad.

Re: you wanted to see new axle assembly

just cut each side of the mount bolt, and the undercarriage slide out, new one slides in. 2 bolts to mount it. to mount the springs, find center of the axle, then measure out from there. set it up as in the picture, block the axle up the the spring, install ubolts.

Re: you wanted to see new axle assembly

I'll be doing the very same thing this weekend, I picked up a super clean trailer frame with a so-so axle and two broken springs for near nothing. It had two flat tires and an odd lug pattern. The owner apparently couldn't or didn't want to buy tires, so I got it for about scrap weight value. I made a new axle and have the springs sitting here already. The trailer is an old Seminole trailer made in Florida. It's a super heavy galvanized frame with those odd sized 10" wheels. I will most likely toss them in favor of some 13" wheels since the fenders are adjustable. The 10" tires that are on it are dried out and so hard that they don't even collapse under the weight of the empty trailer. I towed it about 20 miles on two flat tires with no problems at all. The lugs were seized, and I had no intention of using any of the running gear so I just dragged it home. I got lots of people pointing at the trailer as I drove by, I guess they could see the tires floating oddly in the wide rims. There wasn't much chance of the tires ever holding air, and they were so heavy being 10 ply tires, that they weren't going to dismount by themselves. They actually sort of reseated themselves on the drive home once at highway speed. The tires were actually fine, it turned out to be two bad rims with the rusted out valve stem holes. When I got it home I just took a torch and cut the front spring bolts off and kicked the whole mess to the scrap pile. The frame has been sitting on its side all winter in my garage.
It's a tilt trailer with an extendable tongue. It's also getting some new lights and roller bunks. (It came with tilt style half bunks in the rear and tow bolsters up front. The last owner had been using it to haul two jet skis on. I couldn't imagine what that looked like since the trailer wasn't modified or set up for a jet ski in any way. It probably made a mess out of the jet ski hulls. I am also intalling a set of keel rollers.

Man...you guys are good! I wish I had the know how and the time to rebuild my own stuff. It would save me a ton of money and the satisfaction of knowing that it was done right.

Re: you wanted to see new axle assembly

it weighed 260lbs.

I was surprised to find out trailers weigh more than you think they do. I had to weigh my bare bones galvanized EZ Loader US import for the Scout to get certified for Canadian roads. Would have guessed 250 empty. Was shocked to find out it was 550.
