Hi all.
In my quest for a very lightweight and reliable outboard motor I have found a dealer near where I live that has a sale on new Yamaha 2.5 hp 4 stroke for $849 Canadian $.(~ $700 US)
I have previously asked your opinions on used and old Johnson/Evinrude OB motors and we came to the conclusion that in my case I would be better of with a new motor(reliability was the main issue) so here I am looking for your advice on this new motor,it's a four stroke engine with neutral/reverse drive.the boat I have is a 12 ' Aluminum fishing boat.
What is your opinion on this motor?I have heard small motors like this get too hot even with their water cooled system, if true, does it matter? is the size alright for the boat plus my wife but mostly just me riding alone, no other extra weight added?
Are Honda motors more reliable ?

They don't get hot, not an issue. Its not going to move the boat very fast, but if that's OK it will work. The biggest issue with these small single cylinder motors is they tend to be loud and vibrate a great deal.

A 2.5 HP is a basic engine and poor performer for a 12 footer, will get bored soon, invest wise go for at least a 5 HP engine.

Thank you both for your comments.
I thought this motor being a 4 stroke would not be as noisy but have never seen it inaction to judge the noise level, on the other hand if it's not powerful enough to push a 12' boat, any amount of noise will be unbearable.
I'm glad I asked, I'll be looking for a 5-6 hp 2 or 4 stroke motor.
Thanks again.
Ken.

Ken,

It's not a will not push issue, will push but at a very slow pace worst if heavily loaded. If planing going for a larger 5-6 HP engine go for the next one that has same CC. If 6 HP happens to be same CC as the 5, go for the 6HP.

Have a look at the Tohatsu 2 or 4 strokes 9.8 HP OB. Unique on its class and with ample power to push whatever floats at much better pace than any 5-6-8 HP. It's the older brother of the 6-8-9.8 family.

Got it, thanks sea rider.
The reason I'm more in favor of a 5-6 hp is so I can safely adjust the throttle from low to medium to high if I want to , with the 9.9 hp that I already own I barely go passed the lowest speed unless I put a lot of weight in the front of the boat to make the boat heavy enough to handle the power.
There's a Tohatsu dealer not too far from where I live.I'll go for a browse.

4 stroke 9.8 HP Tohatsu is 210 CC and weights 82 Lbs

http://www.tohatsu.co.jp/marine_en/p...8/Default.aspx

It's fully packed with nice options :

2 stroke 9.8 HP Tohatsu is 170 CC and weights 57 Lbs

Won't be dissapointed choosing any one of them. A 9.9 HP is 250 CC, a much larger OB than a 9.8.

Not an issue where you want the throttle to be set, throttle to idle, fast idle, medium, wot speed as you wish.
