Hey pointer94 your Idea of posting info on how to contribute to our Youth group is a great Idea. Im not sure how Iboats feel about soliciting for contributions So if it is at all against Iboats policy I understand and welcome JB and the Mods to edit my post.
Here is some info on our group. Its called Way Cool Youth Group. It started about 2-3 years ago when two churches here in lacrosse saw that there were many smaller youth groups doing many of the same things around town and they decided to merge their groups to form on non-denominational Christian youth group. It flourished for about a year but because of the leaders not seeing eye to eye on how to run it split back into two groups (sad) It has since then gone through some changes and a little over 9 months ago me and my wife took over it as volunteers full time. When we started it had just gone from 30+ kids weekly down to 8-9. God led us to reach out to the kids that we saw wandering the streets in downtown Lacrosse and we began to see a huge need for a safe, fun and positive place for them to hang out. New Beginnings Christian Fellowship gave us their basement to use and we began renovating the bottom floor of this 100-year-old building. My wife and I spent 100's hours and much of our own money to paint and fix up this place that this Church allowed us to use. Each week we saw new teens come in and take place in our weekly meeting but it became apparent that they wanted more. We would be down there daily working and when we would go outside to leave there would almost always be some kids hanging around wondering if they could come in and hang out or even help. We began to understand that these same kids who to the city of Lacrosse and police were trouble waiting to happen, just wanted to have a cool place to hang out. So we started thinking that we needed to open more than 1 day a week. We have now begun to be open 2-3 times per week and we range from 15-25 teens at a time. Some times its a bible study others just discussions and on every other Saturday it is open just so they can hang out and shoot pool or play ping pong or video games. Every bit of money (other than $300 for paint donated by New Beginnings) has been either donated by my wife and me or has been raised by the teens themselves. We would love to be able to provide these teens with more recreational items as well as continue renovating our space. We have many plans for the future but alas we have to rely on privet funding. 100% of donated items and moneys go towards the teens and renovating. Our group is run completely on a volunteer staff. If anybody feels it in their heart to help our cause in anyway please contact me:
Mike Detrick ( youth leader)
Mikeandronda@juno.com
Way Cool Youth Group
C/O
New Beginnings Christian Fellowship
1-608-782-8030 ( so you can call to verify info)
Senior Pastor Debbie Huber
122 North 5th Avenue
La Crosse, Wisconsin
54602

Lemme see what His Majesty's Secret Service can do. May have to wait till cash flow picks back up, but I'm sure we can do a little something ;)

And BTW, I hope the mod's don't bleep this. I think this board, with it's varied and interesting members, is a great place to post a request for help like this.

Let me see what the clan in NJ can do for you. It may not be that much right off, w/the holidays around the corner. But I'm sure we can help out over the long term. I know what its like volunteering did it for 15 years in boy scouts and all the money came out of my pocket.

Re: Youth group needs help

Mike, God bless you for your efforts in this cause and I wish you great success. Getting private donations of any real sizable amount is difficult in these times, as I'm sure you know.

As a suggestion, I offer you the following "case study".

A similar group was started in my community. They first set some goals or purpose. They focused on community service. They cleaned parks, helped elderly with household chores, served at soup kitchens, etc. They actually started to get requests for help and eventually even got some news coverage.

Once they became known and trusted, donations became greater. Both monitarily and materially (video games, sporting equipment, etc.).

I think folks today are a bit tapped out on just donating without some sort of emotional or physical return. If they know they are donating to a cause that makes a difference in the community, they become much more open to the idea.

Just a thought.

Wow guys thanx for your responses.....Let me assure you that 1 dollar...5 dollars or even 10 dollars means the world to this group. But also understand, your kind words mean just as much to those who volunteer, also please pray for us, your prayer means even more than any money contribution. We deal with alot of garbage the world dumps on these teens and its hard on us adults sometimes. I believe the Iboats members has some of the best people on this planet and the fact of within 15-20 mins of having responses like there has been proves it.... thanx again.

Hey Skiuseme, We are located next to the comunity theater and across the street from the post office in down town Lacrosse. In the basement of of new Beginings Christian Fellowship.
We have done very little advertising (lack of funds) but our name is spreding by word of mouth right now. We see new teens each week. If you know any teens that might be interested We meet on Wed. nights at 6:00 pm till about 9:00 or so. Sun mornings (bible study and message) every other Saturday we meet for yuks and giggles at 6:00pm and also we try to do things on alternate weekends like concerts, movies and bowling....If you might know of any interested teens contact me by email and I can give more details.
By the way I also live in Onalaska...its very nice city. You do any fishing this summer?

Yes I have been killing the crappie up until today down at the spillway, been hopeing for a big northern or some nice walleye but nothing yet. I never do very well on the lake, I just dont know why. I always fished lakes before I moved here and never had any problem catching fish.....now I cant buy a bite on the lake but there are days a swear fish are jumpin in the boat on the river for me.

Re: Youth group needs help

During the summer I was at the spillway fishing with a buddy. Using the old faithful waxie under a slip bobber catching sunnies. I casted up to the over flow area and when my bobber hit the water it just kept going under well to make a long story short I boated a 7 pound northern. Well later that night we had a wonderful fish dinner. :)
