I have my 1975 merc 850 tested and one of the Cylinders has zero compression. The shop is telling me $3000 for a power head rebuild. Any comments?

Re: zero compression

parts for marine engines are expensive stuff. not to forget labour cost.....here in norway it will cost aprox. 10000euro to save a100hp engine of newer age if just submerged....saltwater arent good fore motors... but i dont know prices in engand, and if thats the price i dont think it woud be worth it...

Re: zero compression

It cost $1400 to $2000 for a rebuilt powerhead here in the states, plus shipping, plus labor to install. So $3000 is about right.

Seems like you might be able to have your current unit rebuilt for a little bit less.

Is there a cheeper option? Maybe just fixing the one cylinder?
