I have a ZF IV transmission that I bought part of a mercruiser 8.1 inboard drivetrain. It has water in oil from a bad oil cooler. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what ATF/Oil I should use to flush out the water (15-40 Rotella or ATF) ? The oils much better now but still a bit hazy after 2 flushes.

The transmission is mounted to my 8.1 which I started and ran while I shifted to neutral, forward, reverse and raised RPMs. There was no slipping in gears, noises, grinding, etc when shifting gears and raising RPMs.

Is there anyway to check the transmission to make sure it won't have any problems installed in my boat? It's currently on a pallet hooked up to run on a standalone tank, water, etc.

Suggest using diesel to flush

Don't know of a way to pre-test prior to install. Could take it apart and inspect, maybe another has a better idea
