zinc bolt snapped!!

hello i was trying to change the zinc on my v4 90 johnson the on above the prop snapped the bolt was wondering if anyone has a idea how to fix ?? need to drill and re-thread????

Soak it with a rust buster.... I like seafoam deep creep..... drill and use a screw extractor (e z out) and try that first....

If there's any part of the bolt left use a small vicegrip and some heat. If not drill it out. BUT, DON"T use e-z outs cause if you break one of them off in there, you're screwed !!

And if you break a drill bit off down in the hole your screwed too.... If used properly tools even e-z outs work...... Can they break....sure .... can you melt the aluminum lower case heating it with a torch??

So much for the claim that zincs prevent screws from corroding in, when even the screw holding the zinc corroded and siezed. Ha!!

I still say E-Z outs suck. I learned my lesson many years ago with them and don't have them in my tool box anymore.

What model number 90hp? There are 2 types and sizes of zinc bolts. One threads into the gearcase and the other threads into the zinc anode.

this one threads into gear case and there is no bolt sticking out to grab on to serial J90TLEIE

If you have the bolt that threads into the gearcase, just remove the lower unit and drill out the bolt from the topside where it is exposed.

E-z outs have their place. I hate using them unless it's a larger diameter bolt. The small ones scare me.

Yup you need to use the largest one you can for the bolt....

I kinda like the left-hand drill bits. Get the hole centered and started with a regular bit, then switch to the left hand one.
The heat from the drilling loosens, and at a point, the bolt will spin out on the drill bit.
I am sold on those things.

Gonna do a broken exhaust manifold bolt on my truck this week sometime.
