zip ties on hose between pump and carb

My newly purchased motor (1975 25 HP Evinrude) was marketed as having new fuel pump and hoses. The clear hose between the pump and the carb is held in place with 2 zip ties instead of a hose clamp. He did use hose clamps on the tank fitting to fuel pump hose. I left the fuel hooked up, and there appears to be fuel in the case, indicating a leak someplace. The hose was wet underneath the zip tie attachment from the pump. If gas can get out, air can get in. Is there any particular reason he used zip ties? Should I replace them with regular hose clamps? The clear hose does look new. Should I drill small holes in the case to drain any fuel or water? I thought it had holes, but they may be too small and may be clogged.

Zip "Tie Straps" are common and proper, and it is the retaining clamp that the majority of us prefer.

The "Clear Hose" is not common and is not prefered! The proper hose to use is the reinforced black hose of the required size. If a hose leaks when using a "Tie Strap", it is either a case of using a old hose that does not seat properly ot the wrong hose.

Frankly, I prefer the Tie Straps to secure ther hoses. The clamp or screw type retaining clamps just give a gross appearance.

Ditto! And with clamps it's possible to cut a hose.

Ditto 3. With the proper hose it won't leak even if you don't have any clamps at all. The clamps are for an extra margin of safety and to keep the hose from coming off the fitting. Those screw type clamps are frowned upon by many in the industry. And that clear hose is crap!

Also be sure to use 'marine' tie straps. The head you loop the strap thru is curved to make a good seal.Normal straps have a 'square' head and can leak.

What is the size of the "clear" hose?

Re: zip ties on hose between pump and carb

is it leaking from the piece that is attached to the part of the pump with the thumbscrew? If so, I had one doing that, and the problem turned out to be that when the last person put that thumbscrew on to hold the part with the fuel screen it wasnt properly aligned and the plastic part that the screw holds on, was not getting securely tightened. take that thumbscrew off and make sure that your hose/fuel screen piece isnt catching on anything that would prevent it from making a good seal. In my case, it was the fuel hose catching on another screw which would not allow it to tighten all the way. I know this seems confusing, I don't know how to explain it without pictures and I don't know how to do that either, so in simple terms, just make sure your plastic piece that the fuel line is connected to is getting properly sealed to the fuel pump.
