..a no longer 'in use' UPGRADE copy of Windows 98 SE. I still do not have my Wifes May birthday present, an MP3 recorder/player, working on her laptop. I have a full install version of 98 SE but it won't let me upgrade with it.

I do not want to do a fresh install of SE because it would wipe out all of the laptop utilities.

Any responses, please email me at 'lockan@yahoo.com'

I'm running the original Win 98, that the laptop came with. I glanced at your link. I had heard that there was/were file/s you could rename that would allow the 98 machine to accept of fresh install copy of Win 98 SE. But the person could not remember which one/s.

The post talks about Win 95 to Win 98 with an OEM 98 disc. Would 98 to 98 SE be the same? Also how would you rename a file in DOS? and would you have to give them back their original name when you are done?

Gees, it's been a really long time since I've had to ponder anything concerning Win95 OR 98. Basically , you'd be doing an overlay of Win98 with the SE version.

To rename a file in DOS, you first have to boot to DOS. Using a Windows boot floppy is the easiest way. Typical versions of DOS would be version 6.0,6.22 etc. You can boot from the Win98se CD too. When the machine is booted, start banging on the F8 key. This should bring up a menu to boot to DOS, then enter the commands as stated in that link I posted.

Snip:
"Boot from the win98 oem cd, then type this from a dos prompt:

rename c:\windows\win.com win.old
rename c:\windows\setupx.dll setupx.old

Now switch to the cdrom drive (probably e:)

Then type:

cd win98
setup

End snip:

You won't have to rename the files back when you are done doing the 'install' ( an overlay of the OS really). Those files will be replaced with the new install.

As you may have read, it's best to have a backup of any really important files before you start the upgrade as a precaution against a total meltdown.

This might ease your way too:
Boot Disks

If that fails, then yes, I have a no longer needed uprade win98se disk. Have to mail it from australia, but shouldn't be a big problem.

From my experience, all windows upgrade and full version are the same disk. The price is different because they are giving you a break if you already have windows. I have always installed a virgin PC from an upgrade disk.

It SHOULD do the upgrade and leave your applications alone, but a backup would be a wise move first.

Specifically, once in DOS, how do you rename files? Or can I rename them while still in windows, shut down and restart with Win 98 SE CD in the hopper?

At the A: (or C:) prompt type the command Rename, a space, the full path to the file to be renamed, a space, the new name of the file.

EXAMPLE:

C:\ren c:\windows\system32\cat.txt dog.txt
(this will change the file name FROM cat.txt TO dog.txt)
---------------------------------

Here's the format for the Rename command in Dos.
Renames a file or files.

In the example above, cat.txt is the original file name. dog.txt is the NEW filename.

RENAME [drive:][path]filename1 filename2.
or
REN [drive:][path]filename1 filename2.

Nope, you won't be able to do the renaming thing while you are in the GUI of Windows, the files may be 'in use' and Windows won't allow you to change/rename them. That's why you need to do this renaming business at the DOS level. At the DOS level, Windows hasn't loaded yet.

Re: Solicitation to beg, steal or buy**UPDATE**

Well now, seems once again the "board" has give up some excellent advice. Xcusme's link to utilizing an OEM copy of Win 98 SE, was spot on.

There are, however, several residual issues. Keep in mind this is for a Toshiba Laptop and I chose the labtop installation option when installing 98 SE

The system recognises my 3com pcmcia adaptor but I can't get on the internet (comcast cable).

Windows seems to be using a default plug and play vga video driver and I cannot expand my viewable moniter area to full screen.

I have no sound. Device manager shows yellow question marks for two 'other' devices. One is a PCI communication device and the other is a PCI multi media audio device.

When I open the 'connect to internet' icon, I get the message 'failed to load the internet connection wizard component'.

I have the two 'recovery discs' that came with the laptop, but I don't know if things that I may need are accessable from them. My only experience with 'recovery discs' is that it wipes out your hard drive and starts over again.

Maybe there were some files that I should have saved to a floppy before I did the upgrade? I suppose that I could run the recovery discs, save any necessary files/directories, then reload 98se?

Boomyal
Go to Toshiba's web site and get the drivers for the offending devices for 98se, that should cure at least most of the probs. Also 98 se will sometimes not want to use a driver that it thinks is not correct or what it put in place is better (riiiight) so it may be hard to get it to accept the "correct" driver.
Richard

# Click Start
# Click Programs
# Click Accessories
# Click Internet Tools
# Click Internet Connection Wizard

Can you find it by following the path above??
If not, do this...

# Click Start
# Click Run
# Type CMD
# Type SFC /scannow

Windows will probably ask you to insert the Win98 CD.

BTW, SFC is System File Checker. In the above sequence, you're telling windows to run a small program (SFC) and check to see if all operating files are intact. If it finds a corrupted or missing file, it copies it off of the CD and places the needed files back to the Windows folders as needed.

One last question: Do you run a router with your setup?? If so, which make /model.

Yes, Xcusme, the laptop gets it's cable connection thru a router. It is a Linksys Model NR401.

I will try the second proceedure, ASAP, as the system cannot find the 'internet connection wizard component. Is there a space between SFC and the backslash?

EDIT: when I type CMD (enter) in the run box, I get the message 'cannot find file CMD, or one of it's components'.

Do you think that I eliminated any necessary files by choosing the 'laptop' installation option?

I do see that after the 'upgrade', although all of the data is still seems to be on the computer, all previous programs, such as MS word etc, have been eliminated. ??? Seems like it did a combination update/reload.

ps, I will be gone for a couple of hours before I can try/respond to any of your suggestions. If you think a fresh reload of the 98 recovery discs might be in order to retrieve lost functions, any suggestions on how to save and retrieve any Toshiba utilities and drivers, before reloading a fresh install of 98se would be appreciated. Currently, I cannot expand my video display past 16 colors and 640 x 480. The moniter display is only about 75/80% of the screen.

Space between the SFC command and the 'Forward Slash' ?? Not absolutely necessary, but as shown in the help screen, it makes it easier sometimes for folks to see and use it.

The format for the SFC command can be seen when you get to the small CMD(command screen) and type:

SFC /? then hit return key

This will show you your options to run this command. BTW, most DOS commands will repond to the "/?" after the command, to see options.

'command' in the run box just brings up the dos prompt, showing c:\windows.000\desktop. Entering
sfc /scannow produces 'bad command'

Should I just try to 'reinstall' 98se? Maybe it will pick up something that it missed the first time. Then I could choose the full recommended install. I don't have/run a lot of stuff on this computer so I have lots of space. My wife basically uses it for the internet.

Boomyal -

Type the command:

system\sfc

so it looks like this:

C:\WINDOWS>system\sfc

In windows98, sfc /scannow is an invalid command. Just do it manually.

Re: Solicitation to beg, steal or buy**UPDATE**

Thanks Paul, I'm sorry to drag you guys back into the dark ages. I'd just install XP on this laptop but it is only a 366 mhz Celeron w/ 128 mb ram and a 4 ghz hard drive. I think XP would choke it.

Your suggestion did work for System file check. Interestingly, it showed up a corrupted/incomplete 'setupx.dll' file, that I had renamed before I ran the OEM 98 se disc as an upgrade.

I'm going to follow the 'fix' proceedure now, and see where it takes me.
