Re: Solicitation to beg, steal or buy**UPDATE**

Ok, I ran the SFC, it showed a problem with the setupx.dll, I told it to do whatever it needed to do but it never went to the cd to retrieve the file. I ran the sfc again and it did not come up with a problem.

Interesting note, It appears I now have two versions of windows loaded on the harddrive. Looking in Explore, there is Windows and Windows.000 and the harddrive is half full.????

I'm beginning to think that this all was not a good Idea. It appears that it didn't upgrade but just loaded another version.

The difference is the disc's ability to BOOT or not...An UPGRADE CD will not Boot, but must be run from an already booted PC (wheteher using a bootable floppy or teh present loaded hard drive...a full install will boot and run on "Normally" a formatted clean PC...but it doesn't ahve to be clean or formatted...just usually a tech shop will have a new PC and must get an OS on it, so either a Full Install or OEM CD...

It is definite that I simply loaded a second operating system. Windows and Windows.000. I did it by booting from a boot disc, then telling it to run using CD support. Maybe I should have let it run by letting it autoload from windows.

I think I will 'restore' the original 98 and then try it that way.

I did a similar thing with my own laptop last year, I had two Operating systems in Windows and Windows.000. I had to reinstall all my device drivers. I used another pc to download all the required drivers, I burned them onto a cd and then put the cd in the laptop and installed everything from there.

I'm all well on this count, rudderman. I was able to blow out windows.ooo and with some expert help, redirect DOS to see the original windows 98. It was all still there, with all the laptop drivers, etc.

I was, then, able to get my hands on an actual 98SE Upgrade copy, which went without a hitch. I then downloaded all the necessary USB drivers, which would not work under 98 and I'm off and running.

Being able to retrieve the original OS, with all of it's drivers and downloaded programs, etc, sure saved me a lot of hassle.

Just upgrade to XP and let it install the drivers you need. Why fool around with 95/98 anymore?

'cause it is only a 366 mhz celeron with 192 mb ram and a 4 ghz HD. I think XP would overwhelm it. Besides, the only improvement I really needed was 98SE's USB capabilities.
