I have an 1982 ish 18hp merc. the repair shop say they can't find a part.

Part number is 1399-8143 for a inlet needle & seat. Anyone know where I can get this part? They don't like to work on motors more than 20 years because they say parts are to hard to come by. Except for this one part it's a solid motor with a rebuilt lower end.

Thanks for any help.

Have you tried your nearest Mercury dealer? 1982 is not that old.

I actually called Mercury today and they said that part 1399-8143 is available in kit 8153, not sure if he meant 1399-8153 or just 8153. I then spoke to the repair shop working on it and they said that it doesn't come up as being part of the kit.

I been surfing try to find this kit but can't find it or anything showing the contents of it.

Napa carries merc parts? I went to napaonline and couldn't find a link to marine parts... is it the same napa for car parts? I have a Napa in town here and will try them if were talking about the same.

Re: Need help finding part.

I called Mercury as well as a few other places and was told the inlet needle & seat are no longer available and the only way to get one is to replace the carb. I did find a source that said they did have a new carb, (not rebuilt) still in the box. I ordered it and just recieved it, here's my question-
Hand written on the box it says "improvement kit" 18 & 25 merc. and the label on the box says Quicksilver parts and accessories, carburetor part number 1384-8704a 1.
I opened the box and the only number on the carb, I could find was stamped in the strainer body casting is 1364-4929 with a 4xk under that.

The invoice that came with it shows item number 1384-8704A 1, and in the description column is #1390-8676A 2.
Can someone tell me, is the number on the strainer body the carb number? If so, it doesn't match what's on the box. I went to a few different sites and nothing came up for 1364-4929. Could that number have been replaced by 1384-8704A 1?

I going to drop it off at the repair shop fully expecting to hear it's was the wrong carb in the box.

If anyone is interested, that part number for the inlet needle, part number "1399-8143 INLET NEEDLE AND SEAT" is the EXACT same part as the Tillotson chain saw carb part number 38-3644 (Carb. Kit Replaces Tillotson RK-23HS).

should of been a mechanic instead of a nurse..........:(

I wanted to thank you for this information.

I searched the entire week looking for needle 1399-8143. I saw a post where a company had 20 in stock earlier this year. I ordered one and I ordered the Tillotson chain saw carb part number 38-3644 which was readily available. The one claiming to be a 1399-8143 was not the original mercury part but the needle from Tilliotson 38-3644. It might be hair shorter than the original but will work fine with a bend of the float. There is a notch for the diaphram for but my old retainer spring fit around the bottom of it. The good thing is that the Tilliotson needle has a Viton rubber tip which would hold up better with E10 which I am going to try to stay away from now on as I had last rebuilt the carb 11 years ago and noticed that o-ring in the choke is deteiorated.

I would stick with the Tilliotson 38-3644 (replacement for RK-23Hs) as some of the aftermarket photos appeared to not have the groove for the old retainer spring and was angled/chamfered.

Where did you find the part?
