1989 100 HP Mariner Rectifier Question- Output

On my test trip yesterday I noticed my voltmeter was above the green at about 16 V. It stayed in the green (about 14.5 V) as long as my lights , bilge and bait pump were on. This is a new aftermarket rectifier not OEM. Will this be a problem in the future ? or is 16 volts acceptable?.

Re: 1989 100 HP Mariner Rectifier Question- Output

That's one of the early inline-4 models. The stators were notorious for failure. Most have been replaced by now. Originals are black, replacements are red. The red replacements put out a stronger charging current and require a different voltage regulator. So what I am saying is that if you purchased an original replacement voltage regulator, it won't be strong enough if your stator has been upgraded.

It's easy to see which stator you have. You might have to remove the plastic cover, but you don't have to remove the flywheel. You can see the plastic of the stator. Black is original, red is the upgrade.

I purchased the motor and there was no spark. I did replace the stator with a used one purchased on ebay. It appears to be black. Might it be a sierra or other brand than Merc if its puting out so much voltage? That higher output will not harm my battery? Thanks for your reply.

If you have cked the voltmeter reading with a test meter and it shows the dash mounted voltmeters right. What needs to be done is to replace the regulator, which has failed causing the high voltage problem, if you have already cked for clean connections

Thanks Laddies. I will do that ASAP. The rectifier is brand new but the voltmeter does need to be tested for accuracy.

Re: 1989 100 HP Mariner Rectifier Question- Output

The early charging systems that had only a rectifier, and not a regulator, would damage the battery over time. The only voltage "regulation" was the battery, and if it's damaged it will allow the voltage to go higher. Just age on a battery will do the same thing.

Test the battery before you assume anything is wrong. It sounds like the charging system is acting as it should.

I believe a good upgrade would be to put in a sierra 18-5743 regulator. (replaces the rectifier, but is a little larger mechanically) That should end the overcharging problem.

Hope it helps

Re: 1989 100 HP Mariner Rectifier Question- Output

So I went out again today 85 degrees record high for this date. Beautiful day on the water. Armed myself with a multi tester to double check my voltmeter. Sure nuff when running above 3000 RPM shes charging 16+ volts. Some say its OK, others install a voltage regulator still others that I'll burn out my battery and risk an explosion from the overcharge. Would appreciate more opinions before spending more money. Thanks.

Take the battery over to the local auto fixit shop and have it tested. I think you'll find that it's done given it's best and don't have anything left.
