I have a 175 Evinrude 81 model. We went out for a ride and after several miles at half throttle we trolled with throttle a little above idle for several minutes and the warning buzzer went off. I took it to be overheating buzzer (steady buzz). Throttled back up to a plane and the buzzer quit and no problems from there out. I checked the engine at the house and plently of water is coming out of the pee hole (telltale) and the thermostats are opening up. The buzzer didnt go off in the drive way. Also is the water from the peehole susposed to be hot or cold after the thermostat opens up? Any Ideas?? Thanks

Re: Engine alarm

Hi RJ

Sounds like a classic example of a weak waterpump that can't keep up at idle speed. Also make sure there was nothing blocking the water intakes on the lower unit. Sometimes a plastic bag or such will get sucked into there and cause an overheat. But if it's been awhile since the waterpump impeller has been changed, I would do it now. The water will be lukewarm when the engine is at running temp. It is only an indication that water is flowing, not how much volume....

I would also suggest replacing the waterpump. Mine slowly went out. At idle/slow speeds it wasn't pumping enough, but at higher speeds the temp was fine.

If the water out the pee hole was hot and alarm was sounding then replace that water pump! How old is the old pump? Good Luck!

Re: Engine alarm

The water from the peehole stayed cool. The only reason I asked is I couldnt remember if the peehole water temp changed when the stat opened. I have had the boat for the last 5 years and I havent changed the impeller. SO I guess it is about time to do that. Think I should change the whole kit or just the impeller. Thanks

Re: Engine alarm

The water temp from the tell-tale will vary slightly as the thermostat cycles. It may have been that the thermostat stuck shut momentarily but I also go along with the water pump goiing south as the source of the problem
