I bought this 1996 bayliner capri 1700 knowing it was a little soft around the ski storage hole in the middle of the boat. I got a pretty good deal on this boat because of that of course and the blue stripe on the side was faded. So I just removed the oxidation and shined up the gelcoat and now its time for the floor.
It seems like there is just one piece in between the right and left seat base with the hole in the middle. I have kinda just broke the dead wood on the left side but that epoxy stuff is hard to get off. Are there any suggestions on the best way to complete this project? All other places seem hard so this is the only soft spot on the boat. I appreciate any input you may have. Also, is it wise to connect new carpet to old? I really dont want to re carpet the whole thing. Man, this project is bigger than I thought. If this doesnt work out do you know how much something like this would cost if a professional did it??? thanks guys....mike

Welcome to iboats Mike!!
I think it would be best to replace the whole floor. Do it right the first time and be done with it. You also need to see if there is rot under the floor.
Others with more knowledge will have input I'm sure.

Personally I woudl replace the whole section at least. if you have the time then do the whole floor but with summmer coming its hard to have a boat laid up. if you want to do it wait till after season then you have the time to do it

okay so ive run into a little problem. I went ahead and pulled out the entire carpet to the floor because im going to replace it. My problem is that I thought the middle section between the seats was a single piece of plywood but it seems to be part of the board that goes all the way to the bow and the sides. Do you think I could just lay a whole separate piece on the old plywood. I've already cut the part with rot and the rest looks good. Any ideas? Im afraid Ive compromised the integrity of the other sections. I know one thing is for sure.....removing fiberglass is a b!@tch!!!! Im too scared to cut past the stringers and runners......i dunno im pretty frustrated at this point.
Ive attached a photo...!!!

You got what you paid for. To replace the floor, you need to remove everything, except the motor. All the front and rear structures needs to come out, because thet are tied to the floor. It is quite a big job. You could always try and patch in a new piece of wood as a temporary fix. Seal all edges with resin. Screw and glue sealed tabs under the existing plywood, patch a new piece in and then glass it. That may work for you. Unfortunately the proper way to replace a rotten floor takes a lot of work.

Good luck,

Rob.
