Are there any outboards you wish you could have back? What motor(s) would you most like to find at a garage sale(or wherever). I'm just wondering what you folks consider a "keeper". I'm sure most of you are going to say "all of them". Bigger Better Faster More! MJ

All of my boats have been projects, I like to mess around with them. My first few "projects" were I/Os. My first foray into the outboard world was a 75 HP 3 cyl Evinrude; it was a great way to get my feet wet with an outboard. Very simple to work on, and super-reliable.

That said, I love my 150 Merc I have now!

1970's Evinrude 33hp "Big Twin"
Should have restored it but instead I got rid of it and went with a newer Evinrude 25 hp.

Come to think of it I would have real trouble parting with my current outboard. 140hp Johnson 1985 model. Runs like a dream, pulls me up on ski's no problem, pulls 4 people on the tube no problem and purrs like a kitten under all loads and conditions. VRO working great with usual and minimal maintenance and starts first time every time so far. Towed in a jetski today that had died in the middle of Lake St Clair with a young couple floating aimlessly around and the female of the couple almost to the point of hysteria !!!! Put her in the boat and left him on the jetski. She vowed on the way back that they would be getting a boat to replace it within a week !!!

my 1990 85hp yamaha racing motor (tiller conversion) ..... was a full modified motor with 4 shiney exaust coming out the motor (a real looker) .... it only ran with race fuel .... damn that thing was fast, we use to give these guys with their 21 foot speedboats with 200hp motors on a good run for their money ..... I mis those days .....

probably the easiest starting motor I ever had was a 95ish 9.9 Merc, you could just drag that out of "hibernation" prime the bulb, pull the cord about 1 foot and it would go every time, I was talking to the guy I sold it to some years back and he could not believe how easy it starts, must have just been a good one or something, even a 6 year old can start it without any effort, geees whish I still had it, got a 20 Merc now, and even though it is OK, it is nowhere near as good that old 9.9

Yup, yup -- love the shape of those. My parents had one on their little Arkansas Traveler and I can remember sitting there as a little kid, facing backwards, watching that motor for hours in fascination as we zipped along. Real smooth and quiet. That little boat and motor got me hooked for life on boating.

Re: What outboard do you wish you had never sold?

Well, I haven't sold a motor yet, but you can bet that if I sold my 4 deluxe I would regret it. That is why that motor is not getting sold. Unless I get an ungodly high offer I would not sell it. And, if I got that ungodly high offer, I would use that money to buy another 4 deluxe or 4.5, and somethin' else too.

On the other hand, as much as I love OMC, and would hate to get rid of one, the elec. shift 71 50 horse is pissing us off. We tried running it, and the solenoids are not cooperating. We have just picked up a 79 mechanical shift 55 johnson for a great deal, and will keep the 50 in the garage as a winter project, to either use on a boat that is not required to be reliable, or just sell it before it craps.
I am hoping I will be able to say the same about the 55 as I have the 4 deluxe.

That 4 deluxe is a definite keeper. I wish I had one. Still looking though and hoping.

thats because the smaller merc was really a tohatsu in desguise
