cummins/mercruiser question for the experts.

Hi All
I'm currently in the market to buy a Bayliner 2858 of circa 1998 vintage that has a Cummins/Mercruiser 4.2 6 cyl turbo diesel. (UK petrol prices are crippling!)

I note that the recent Bayliner 2858 (now rebadged as 288) has the 4.2 diesel injection model producing 250hp,a friend has one and she goes real nice even with four up!

My dilema is this ...........I have a found a lovely boat that is within my budget that is fully loaded with all the toys, however it has the 4.2 200hp version with mech injection and the B2 single prop drive,I'm afraid this may be slightly underpowered????

I note that a 4.2 220hp version was also produced and fitted in these boats but they seem few and far between!!

My question to you experts is........Can the 200hp be upgraded to provide more power? i.e larger turbo? or injectors etc??
And would fitting the B3 duoprop be possible? would it make a difference?
and would this be a straight forward unbolt and bolt on job?

Many thanks in advance and I look forward to any help or suggestions.

You may want to check, but I don't think that engine is a Cummins diesel, it is probably the old BMW diesel. And they are VERY underpowered.
The Cummins engines didn't start in use till 2001 or 2002 I think.

Hi Don

How are you? Miss you over on the Bayliner forum, but I can guess exactly why you no longer frequent that site,(rhymes with ****?)

Anyway ref what you said above if its any use and if you are able to identify from a photo I have put a link below to a boat in States which is exactly the same as the one I'm looking at,it has a picture of the motor which is the 200hp !!

What you reckon? BMW or Cummins?

Thanks

It wasn't just him, it was that site in general.............

That is the BMW motor, without a doubt. I've worked on enough of those underpowered POS to know.

Seems you are no fan of these motors then Don!

Fair enough I guess but should I decide to go ahead and purchase this boat is there anything I could do to improve the power output??

For instance what gives the 220 hp version its extra grunt? both look exactly the same externaly! both are 4.2 ltr!

And would the B3 drive improve things?

Thanks again

Re: cummins/mercruiser question for the experts.

The 220 hp version was also a D-Tronic, as they called them. Electronically controlled. Couldn't tell you what all was changed to increase the hp.
Do a sea trial on the boat and see what you think of it speed wise. But that size boat needs 250 hp minimum. The Bravo III isn't going to do anything except steer straighter until you get to 50 mph...... and that's not going to happen with that boat.
We had a boater a couple years ago that was passing thru, that had a Bravo 3 drive that blew up. We put on a Bravo 2 on and on his return trip told us there was no difference in performance. But it did have more low speed wander, which we told him would happen. He said he could deal with that for the price difference of the B3 to B2.

They might call it a Cummins, but I can tell by looking at it that it's NOT.

THEY also call it a gas engine. ;)
