spiders around exterior of house

my place is crawling with spiders, not so bad inside but everywhere outside. i even have spiders hiding in the door handle recesses on my truck. one tried to hitch a ride inside the truck with me this morning, i had to slam on the brakes and jump out when it dropped between my legs when i was backing out! yikes, no thanks

i don't mind spiders, they can eat as many bugs as they want. it's just that they're building webs outside the windows, across the sliding door, from the eaves of the house to the siding...anywhere/everywhere. i can't go outside without having to clear the way first so i don't walk through webs. they're crapping all over the place too.

anyone have any homemade recipes to spray on the house to keep them away? anything i can buy? i've seen posts for spider problems down at the dock where you can't spray, i can spray here!

I used to freak out at spiders, too. Now I welcome them (except the black widows and brown recluses, which are a small minority).

Yes, when we have the weather we have had this year there will be too many of them spinning webs where we don't like them. Never any fun walking into one, but they are more fun than the prey they remove from our environment.

I wish I had more, especially the golden orb garden spiders. Great fun to watch.

i was fine with the live and let live approach. if they were making any sort of dent in the bug population i'd be fine with em. it seems all they're doing is making a mess though.

my sliding door is new, white vinyl too. well, used to be white now it's mostly spotted black. these suckers are getting big and mean looking. come n get as many as you want. lol

Costco has a gallon of stuff that you spray around the base of the foundation. Works wonders for keeping Pidoos away from and out of the house.

Look for a product called Tempo Ultra SC.
This you can spray this around your house and even inside.Best I have found without getting out the Restricted Use Pesticides..

Go somewhere that sells outdoor chemicals and look what they have for bug killers. They've got all sorts of things these days. Last year I had a product that screwed onto the end of the hose (can't remember what it was) and sprayed the whole yard...killed just about everything.

It was creepy, I sprayed a small tree and about 10 spiders came half way down on their silk, and then died. They just hung there dead like christmas decorations for weeks...

If you're using pesticides, look for one with cypermethrin. Another way, although much slower, is to continually destroy their webs as fast as they're built - no web, no food, no eat.

Well, that is not the species I was calling golden orb.

The ones I mean are plump and big, black and yellow. They make big orb webs. I never saw a bird or bat get caught, but one I called Goldy caught huge grasshoppers and even a cicada.

I had a huge cicada chase me around the garage last night bouncing off the ceiling light and chirping at me.

Those big yellow and black spiders are really cool to watch when they wrap up their prey. When I was a kid, I'd catch grasshoppers and throw them into the web just to watch the show.

I saw something unexpected last year in regards to those garden spiders. A cardinal plucked him out of his web and flew him up into a tree and ate him.

Problem with that kind of stuff Zm is that little pooch goes into the blahs every time we used to use a wide spread bug chem. Got to be more selective these days. The little bugger sticks his nose into anything he detects as new and different. Even granular lawn insecticides seem to get to him.

JB, if this is the spider you have, it's a writing spider. Wikipedia it.

But it only writes conservative messages, so don't destroy it.

I had a terrible problem with spiders many years ago. Exterminator came and gave me a quote, then said, "If you want to do it yourself, save some money and look for an over the counter insecticide with cypermethrin. They can be found. Only difference will be yours will not stick as long as mine, so you will have to cover your area of protection every month or so instead of every 3 - 6 months. But it will be much cheaper for you."

I did, and haven't had problems since.

i use to work for orkin pest control im here to tell ya spiders will never go away you may kill a few. the problem with them is they do not absorb pesticides thru there legs or body most pesticdes work bye absorstion of a pesticide into the central nervous zone killing the animals such as roachs . spiders on the other hand dont so unless you directly spray them with a harsh chemical. there not gonna die. i use starting fluid around my house when i see a large spider. but the amount of eggs layed by spiders. were all domed to be taken over . desiel fuel will work sprayed outside killing spiders and everything alive with a lasting residual. no smoking please.

I had this problem all last year. When it came back with a vengance this spring I called an exterminator. They sprayed and they were gone. And haven't come back in 2 months. They have a 90 day warrenty on their application so if the spiders come back, they spray for free.

The consequences of meddling with the balances of nature may come back to bite you (or sting you).

Seems we are always trying to fix our screw-ups with the balances by comitting further screw-ups.

Population explosions among prey critters cause population explosions among predators. Mess with any level of the food chain and you are gonna get punished eventually.

I say leave the spiders alone. If their prey decreases they will decrease.

Theres a product at your local farm supply called Sniper thats just for killing spiders, their eggs and and off sping.

here's a shot of a couple of the fat little bastards. counted em last night around 10 pm...7 of them trying to set up webs on the sliding glass doors alone.
